Those making their way through the horrific and fascinating world of Bloodborne will face many such bosses, including Rom, the Vacuous Spider, as this Great One is not an optional boss. While she and her arachnid-like offspring can pose a unique challenge, there are a few ways to take down this being from beyond the stars.

Weaknesses

Rom is weak to Fire and Arcane damage while being very weak to Bolt damage. This makes any weapon possessing attacks infused with these elemental types a solid choice to use again the Vacuous Spider. However, she takes a normal amount of damage from purely physical weapons.

Resistances

The Great One lurking in a lake is immune to both kinds of Poison, so don't bother trying to cheese her with consumables or other toxic methods. Furthermore, even if she was partially susceptible to such tactics, her many spiderlings would not allow players much time to stand around lobbing Poison Knives.

While Rom is between 100% HP and 67% HP (Phase 1), she will not attack the player, instead of teleporting away and allowing her underlings to do her dirty work, however, during Phase 2, which begins when her HP drops below 67%, she begins to unleash dangerous assaults that can severely cripple a hunter. Furthermore, she gains a powerful maneuver out of desperation when she enters Phase 3 as her HP drops below 34%, which can catch players by surprise if they're not expecting it.

Energy Explosion Attack (Phase 2 & Phase 3)

The boss will lift her tail into the air amidst a swirling of wind that will be shortly be followed by an explosive blast of pale energy that has a sizable area of effect.

The moment that one sees Rom lift her tail, run away as quickly as possible to avoid being caught by the blue-white eruption of power from this Great One.

Falling Ice Blocks (Phase 2 & Phase 3)

Rom will rear back and face the sky to summon huge chunks of ice in the area. This rain of glacial boulders is difficult to dodge, as the path of each projectile is hard to predict as well as due to the projectiles themselves being hard to see thanks to the light-colored sky.

One's best bet in avoiding this colossal hail is to keep moving while occasionally sprinting and dodging until the attack ends.

Ice Pillars (Phase 2 & Phase 3)

In an unexpected maneuver, the Great One will roll onto her side and summon more ice, though this time from another direction: below. A few thick columns of ice will rise out of the water to hit the player from beneath in a sneaky attack that can easily catch one off-guard due to how busy the boss room is thanks to the spiderlings.

However, before each chunk of ice appears, there is a bluish spot that shows where their hitbox will show up, so as long as hunters keep an eye out for those, this attack can be avoided easily.

Desperate Thrash (Phase 3)

When low on HP, Rom will occasionally freak out and begin flailing her head and tail violently, which can do some serious damage to the player due to how large the Vacuous Spider is in terms of mass.

This move is hard to predict, as the boss does not telegraph it very noticeably, but the moment one sees Rom shaking, that is the sign to back off and wait for her to stop flipping out.

Other Tips For The Fight Against Rom, The Vacuous Spider

rom on her back using an attack.

Rom, The Vacuous Spider Takes More Damage When Hit In The Body

This is the inverse of what it's like fighting most larger enemies and bosses, as they usually take the most damage when hit in the head. The Great One's cranium is made from a tough, stone-like substance, but her body is made from squishy alien flesh; even physical attacks against her body that lack elemental properties can hurt Rom quite a lot.

Rom, The Vacuous Spider Can Take Damage While Teleporting

When one sees her trying to perform a tactical retreat, don't let up on the assault! In fact, one should take this chance to land a free hit on Rom while she is temporarily fleeing, as her hitbox persists until the teleportation animation fully dissipates. Try to line up a charged strong attack with one's melee weapon or unleash a mighty Hunter Tool that has a long casting time.

Use Fire Paper & Bolt Paper If One's Weapon Can Be Buffed

For players taking the melee approach and who don't possess a sufficiently powerful weapon with innate elemental attack, Fire Paper and Bolt Paper can add substantial damage output to one's primary armament. This is especially helpful during Rom's Phase 3 when she is the most deadly and ending her swiftly is crucial.
