As far as gaming conventions go, BlizzCon is one of the the biggest. Blizzard’s convention focuses entirely on the developer’s own games, and has been used to give fans a sneak peek at new content in the likes of World of Warcraft, and Diablo 3, such as the reveal of Diablo 3’s Demon Hunter class and the PvP multiplayer mode. In previous years the event has given players a chance to play titles in-development, and hosted the unveilings of all-new titles such as Blizzard DOTA, which is now in development as Heroes of the Storm.
It looks as though BlizzCon 2014 may also have a surprise announcement in store for fans of the Warcraft developer. There is a mysterious gap in the schedule for BlizzCon 2014. Over of Reddit, user ReddinRules discovered a tantalizing two-hour window without an event – and at BlizzCon’s main stage, too. With the two-hour window coming right after Blizzard’s opening ceremony, it seems likely the Blizzard could have something exciting in store for attendees.
Leaving a gap like that is not something Blizzard has done before at the convention. However, the mystery doesn’t end there. There is also a large amount of unaccounted-for floorspace in hall C of the Anaheim Convention Center. Could it be that the space will be filled by whatever point of interest fills those hours?
So, if there is a special announcement, what could it be? Ruling out the Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void expansion, which is apparently getting its own panel, and Titan, which Blizzard cancelled after 7 years of work, there are some plausible possibilities. At last year’s BlizzCon we found out that Blizzard is preparing for a Warcraft 3 re-release, and the developer may well have more news on this project.
There are also rumblings surrounding Blizzard’s trademark of ‘Overwatch’. Blizzard trademarked the name in April of this year, leading to speculation that it could be Mike Booth’s first project for the developer, who joined from Turtle Rock. Maybe Blizzard are ready to reveal details on ‘Overwatch’ – whatever it may be.
Fans looking forward to attending BlizzCon 2014 already have some excitement in store. Blizzard announced yesterday that the heavy metal titans Metallica would be performing at the convention. Metallica follow in the footsteps of Blink 182, who performed last year, and fellow rockers Ozzy Osbourne and Foo Fighters.
“We’re thrilled to have Metallica blowing out our speakers at BlizzCon this year,” said Blizzard CEO and co-founder Mike Morhaime. “After two full days of epic gaming and intense eSports action, an earth-shaking concert is the perfect sendoff for everyone at the show and watching from home.” Who knows: maybe those mysterious 2 free hours and unattributed floorspace could be for an impromptu secret performance from the metal legends?
BlizzCon 2014 takes place on November 7-8, 2014 at the Anaheim Convention Center.
