Blizzard has been undergoing many changes in recent years, especially since it merged with Activision. So much has happened, in fact, that Blizzard leaving its historic offices is by far the least of the changes.

Activision Blizzard has been undergoing massive staff changes at a rapid rate. For two years now many employees have been laid off despite record profits for the company. However, not all of the developers leaving Blizzard were fired. Many veterans of the industry and of Blizzard, in particular, have left of their own volition to begin new indie companies. One of these offshoots is Frost Giant Studios, which has a potentially giant project in the works.

Frost Giant Studios is in the early stages of creating a new RTS title. Little is known about the title except that it will be the "evolution" of classic Blizzard RTS titles. While a new RTS game is not particularly significant on its own, it should be noted that the team is made up of veterans who worked on Blizzard's finest RTS titles. These include Warcraft 3Starcraft, and its sequel. The importance of Starcraft in video games, especially games for PC and the RTS genre, cannot be overstated. There's a reason it's being considered for the Video Game Hall of Fame in 2021, 23 years after its initial release.

As crucial as it was for the company's development, Blizzard itself has not pursued Starcraft as of late. In fact, content development for Starcraft 2 was officially ended in October of 2020. With Blizzard moving away from its roots, the developers who made up its roots have decided to strike out on their own. Early details are still being hammered out, to the point where a game engine has not even been chosen yet, but supposedly it will be within a month.

The room for growth in RTS games is apparent to many, and hopefully, the folks at Frost Giant are the ones to make it happen. As it stands now, the RTS genre has been in a dead zone for some time, with few new titles or innovations. Starcraft 2's ten-year anniversary proved that even older titles can be experienced in new ways, so hopefully, new titles can bring more fun times to the table.

Meanwhile, Blizzard continues to undergo an exodus of its old soldiers, as Frost Giant is by no means unique in its status of Blizzard veteran-started indie studios.
