The revival of NES and SNES era action platformer games recently has seen a steady flow of retro-inspired games that capture the style of the genre, while updating the experience to work for modern consoles. Shovel Knight is a prime example, but more recently, games like Cyber Shadow have figured out the formula of what makes action platformers fun, while adding modern touches. Now, the classic NES series Blaster Master is finishing off its reboot trilogy of games with, appropriately, Blaster Master Zero 3.

The mechanics of the Blaster Master series are a hybrid of side-scrolling platforming action, coupled with top down action segments that offer a little more free-form movement. In the side-scrolling portions, players take control of the tank, SOPHIA, and for the top down segments, players control the hero, Jason. Developer Inti Creates recent work on Bloodstained: Shadow of the Moon 2, shows that the company is dialed in when it comes to old school action.

The announcement trailer for Blaster Master Zero 3, shows off some nice pixel art and looks to be more of the same for fans of the first two games in the trilogy. With a release date of July 29, the game isn't far off. The game seems to have light Metroidvania elements to it, with Jason or SOPHIA requiring certain powerups to unlock new areas. Incorporating these touches in its games is a reason why developer Inti Creates is in the conversation of studios to work on future Castlevania games.

After just announcing that its other retro platformer, Azure Striker Gunvolt 3, is scheduled to be released in 2022, Inti Creates is making the most of its reputation as a quality developer of old school styled games.

Blaster Master Zero 3 will be available July 29 on PC, PS4, and Switch.
