As virtual reality gains more coverage and attention from mainstream gaming, more independent developers are also stepping onto the field. While titles like Iron Man VR are more well-known, the VR community is starting to cultivate novice modders and developers. Now, one of the most popular independent efforts, Blade and Sorcery, is approaching its final stages of development. Recently, developer WarpFrog announced a massive update for the VR game as it begins to leave early access.

First released in 2018, Blade and Sorcery allows players to wield medieval weapons for close-range combat. During its time in Steam's early access program, the game has received high praise from players for its customizability and fluid gameplay. And according to a new trailer, the game's eighth update will finalize some of the major gameplay elements.

The game's Sorcery Update trailer features two completely new fire and gravity spells. WarpFrog has also upgraded Blade and Sorcery's lightning spell. Existing spells can now merge, and the developer is also including new customization options. Blade and Sorcery modders will also be able to customize armor. Outside of the new weapons and character designs, the trailer also revealed a new map called The Citadel. For newcomers, the patch notes said that the update also includes a tutorial mode. Finally, the developer revealed that this expansive update will come to players on June 4.

According to the developers, Update 8 offers players so much new content because it is a combination of features from two major milestones on Blade and Sorcery's development roadmap. Although the update was delayed last January, it is still a massive leap forward in terms of the game's schedule. In response to the trailer, many fans also praised the game's accessibility for modders. However, this decision is in line with WarpFrog's own philosophy that mods "greatly add value to a game... that a developer sometimes cannot."

Fans can look forward to Blade and Sorcery's eighth update in a few days. Overall, WarpFrog's success is a sign of growing talent in VR. As virtual reality continues to receive more general recognition, hopefully, more titles will take center stage.

Blade and Sorcery is available now for the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and Valve Index.
