April 28th was National Superhero Day, an annual holiday where fans celebrate superheroes, both real and fictional. Every year, fans share their appreciation for the actors and creators who bring their favorite characters to the page and screen, while also sharing inspirational stories about the real-life superheroes that have impacted their lives. This also means cosplayers come out in full force. It's a good day to boost their talent and show off their incredible costumes, as you can see with this impressive Black Widow cosplay.

After being introduced to the MCU over ten years ago, Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow is finally getting her own movie. Created in 1964 by Stan Lee, Don Rico, and Don Heck, Black Widow made her first live-action appearance in Iron Man 2, where she was portrayed by actress Scarlett Johansson. An ex-KGB spy turned S.H.I.E.L.D operative, Black Widow was a founding member of the Avengers and has gone on to have major roles in other MCU films, including Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Infinity War/Endgame. Unlike other Avengers such as Iron Man or Captain American, Black Widow has never gotten her own solo film, until now. The character is immensely popular and fans have been calling on Marvel Studios to make a Black Widow film for the past decade.

Now, the Black Widow movie is finally coming out and fans are showing their excitement in all kinds of ways, including cosplay. The cosplayer who goes by the name Kaycee (or @captainkayceecosplay on Instagram) decided to revisit one of her more impressive costumes in honor of National Superhero Day. As you can see, she bears a striking resemblance to actress Johansson and her costume includes Widow's signature electroshock batons, which she first used in Avengers: Age of Ultron. If you browse Kaycee's Instagram, you can see more examples of her incredible work, including cosplay of other famous Marvel characters like Jean Grey and Wanda Maximoff/Scarlett Witch. So enjoy Kaycee's work, celebrate cosplay, and happy belated National Superhero Day.

Black Widow film has actually been in the works as far back as 2004, years before she made her first appearance in the MCU. At one point, Lionsgate was planning to make a film focused on the comic book assassin with writer/director and Solid Snake voice actor David Hayter attached to the project, but the film was subsequently dropped. While a Black Widow movie is long overdue, some fans feel that it's too little too late, considering that the character died during the events of Avengers: Endgame.

As a result, the Black Widow film will serve as a prequel, set sometime between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. It also doesn't help that the film has now been pushed back over a year from its original release date due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Consequently, Disney has settled on same-day theatrical and Disney Plus releases for Black Widow. While it isn't the standalone feature film premiere fans might have expected for the character after all these years, it is certainly better than nothing after a year's worth of delays.

Black Widow will be released in theatres and on Disney Plus on July 9th, 2021.
