At first glance, Black Widow gives off a archetypal femme fatale vibe. She wears a skintight suit, possesses an assortment of skills, and has a penchant for the deadly. However, this member of Marvel's Avengers isn't to be trifled with. In fact, Black Widow remains one of the most decorated superheroines across Marvel's roster.

Does Natalia Romanova — commonly known as Natasha Romanoff — have more to share outside her iconic red hair an signature black garb? As a matter of fact, the Black Widow has a number of surprising details about her life waiting for discovery.

10 Less Ballerina, More Trained Assassin

Red Room Training - Black Widow Comics Facts

As with popular spies, Black Widow doesn't have a definitive origin story. In one account, an orphaned Natasha ended up in the care of soldier Ivan Petrovitch before the Hand abducted her. However, it's implied that mutant methuselah Romulus ordered Natasha to allow her abduction, so she could kill the leader of the Hand after rising in rank. When Wolverine rescued Natasha, she became a scholar and an athlete. She even became a popular ballerina in the USSR.

However, an alternate account claims the USSR already got ahold of Natasha as a child. While in Petrovich's care, Natasha also became a part of the Black Widow Ops Program. In this account, her training required the implantation of false memories — including her time as a ballerina. Natasha later discovered that other Black Widows had false memories to ensure their loyalty to the Program.

9 She's Not Without Powers

People often mention the "fact" that Hawkeye and Black Widow are the only members of the Avengers roster who, with the exception of Iron Man and his armor, don't have superpowers. In fact, Black Widow actually possesses superhuman abilities of her own.

Thanks to the Red Room's Dr. Lyudmila Kudrin, the Black Widow Ops Program created their own version of the Super Soldier Serum. This Serum became a part of Black Widow's training, endowing her with a biochemically-enhanced physiology. She has enhanced strength, durability and stamina, as well as speed and reflexes. This Serum also enhanced her longevity and immune system.

8 She Has A Widowsuit & A Utility Belt

It seems Black Widow's iconic black suit and yellow belt aren't just for show. Her specially-designed costume is comprised of a synthetic stretch fabric that provides resistance to knives and small firearms. Likewise, the feet and fabric components have micro-suction cups that help her cling to ceilings and walls.

Her belt of discs isn't just for display, either. These discs either act as charges of plastic explosives or miniaturized containers of other equipment. Black Widow is almost always fully-equipped for any mission.

7 Spider-Man Inspired Her Gauntlets

Black Widow's Gauntlets are a staple of her arsenal, but they weren't always offensive in nature. In her first appearance, her bracelets simply had Widow's Line, or her swinging string. However, Spider-Man's web-shooters inspired her to modify her Gauntlets. At times, Black Widow also mentioned that her Gauntlets can weigh up to four kilos and have difficult-to-replace parts.

In her current adventures, Black Widow's Gauntlets receive maintenance and upgrades from SHIELD. Her Gauntlets now have more offensive tools as well. These include a knock-out drug (Widow's Kiss), an electrostatic discharge (Widow's Charge), a radio transmitter, tear gas pellets, and explosives.

6 Her Tangled Love Life

Complicated Romances of Black Widow - Black Widow Comics Facts

Given her skill in seduction, it's implied that Black Widow can charm anyone in her missions if necessary. However, Natasha also became entangled in her own complex love life. In her KGB days, Natasha and test pilot Alexei Shostakov entered an arranged marriage (as per the KGB) that abruptly ended when Alexei became the Red Guardian. During her days in the Program's Red Room, Natasha developed a relationship with Bucky Barnes.

Meanwhile, in her time fighting against the Avengers and attempts at defection, she fell in love with her fellow former-villain Hawkeye. Additionally, in San Francisco she became romantically involved with Daredevil. In her days leading the Champions, she also had a brief relationship with Hercules.

5 Became The Red Cat

Red Cat - Black Widow Comics Facts

In Symbiote Spider-Man: Alien Reality, Sorcerer Baron Mordo and Hobgoblin got ahold of the Word of God, a reality-altering book. When they "rewrote" reality, Spider-Man ended up in a timeline where his Black Cat had red hair and a redder suit. Upon further inquiry, Spider-Man discovered that his Black Cat isn't Felicia Hardy, but rather Natasha, now known as Red Cat.

This iteration of Black Cat seemed to have the original Black Cat's costume and equipment. The Red Cat Suit comes with a grappling hook and – if this is the same Tinkerer-designed suit – can enhance the physical attributes of its wearer.

4 Her Attachment To Death Itself

Fans received a shocking twist when 2019's Avengers: Endgame saw Black Widow sacrifice herself during the Avengers' Time Heist to stop Thanos. Unfortunately, Black Widow served as one of few casualties to never make a return (so far) in future MCU installments. However, it seems a fatal fate follows Natasha regardless of the medium.

In the "Secret Empire" storyline, Black Widow opted to carry out the task of eliminating Hydra Captain America herself, so Miles Morales (Spider-Man) wouldn't have to fulfill a prophecy of murdering the former Avengers leader. However, in the ensuing chaos, Hydra Cap's shield broke Black Widow's neck, killing her.

3 A Game Of Clones

Black Widow Clones - Black Widow Comics Facts

But what about Black Widow's recent appearances in the comics? Apparently, after her death, the Black Widow Ops Program created a clone of Natasha. However, instead of simply getting selected memories, Ursa Major got to bribe the clone's handler to give Clone Natasha her full slate of memories in secret.

Clone Natasha managed to rise to the rank of colonel within the Program. However, thanks to her memories, she turned new recruits and Yelena Belova clones against the Program as well. Thankfully, her plan was a success. With the help of Hawkeye and Bucky, Clone Natasha and her fellow Program members managed to dismantle the Black Widow Ops Program.

2 Membership In The Infinity Watch

Infinity Watch member - Black Widow Comics Facts

Adam Warlock assembled the Infinity Watch to ensure that the Infinity Stones didn't fall into the wrong hands. When the Stones resurfaced in various places around reality, Adam Warlock and Doctor Strange set out to find their possessors to reform the Infinity Watch.

Black Widow became a member of the Infinity Watch by becoming the bearer of the Space Stone. However, the Stone didn't "come" to her. Wolverine originally found the Space Stone, but left it in Black Widow's care. In subsequent events, the Infinity Watch seemingly disbanded as Adam Warlock granted the Stones sentience — and therefore the ability to forge their own destiny.

1 She Got Her Female Avengers Moment

Black Widow and the Marvel Girls - Black Widow Comics Facts

After her death in Avengers: Endgame, fans wanted Black Widow to lead the charge of women Avengers against Thanos. After all, this moment featured the most iconic women in the MCU roster, including Scarlet Witch, Okoye, Valkyrie, and even an armored Pepper Potts.

Thankfully, Black Widow already got her own "female Avengers" moment, at least in the comics. Alongside her appearance in the Iron Man 2 film, Black Widow also starred in Black Widow and the Marvel Girls. In this four-issue miniseries, Black Widow joined the Enchantress, She-Hulk, Spider-Woman, and Storm in some short but memorable adventures.
