If someone is abducted, who would they call for help? Blumhouse Production's latest supernatural horror film The Black Phone explores this idea through a suspenseful, dark storyline.

The Black Phone is an upcoming horror movie starring Ethan Hawke, Jeremy Davis (LOST, Helter Skelter), James Ransone (Sinister, IT Chapter 2), and newcomers Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw. It has an incredible production crew, guided by writer and director Scott Derrickson, best known for his work on Marvel's Doctor Strange and Sinister. While the movie isn't expected to make its theatrical debut until 2022, it premiered at Fantastic Fest in September 2021 to raving reviews.

The story has been described as enticing and lead actor Thames has been praised for his engaging performance as the lead abductee, Finney Shaw. Describing his character, Thames shared with us, "I play Finney. He's a smart kid. He's shy, but he's also very clever. And he's very mature for his age because his home life isn't the best. Because of that, he has a very close-knit relationship with his sister, who is played by Madeleine McGraw."

He continued to say, "Later in the movie, he gets abducted by Ethan Hawke's character, The Grabber, and he gets puts in this basement. Down in the south of the basement, he finds a disconnected black phone and he gets calls from it. He soon realizes that he can hear the voices of The Grabbers' previous victims. They give Finney clues and they try to make sure that what happened to them, doesn't happen to him."

Prior to starring in this role, Thames graced the ballet scene for four years, touring in The Nutcracker. He also played the character, Daniel Stevens, in Apple TV's For All Mankind. Speaking about his artistry, Thames expressed, "From a young age, I've always loved performing. And I've always had a big imagination, so it wasn't too hard." In an interview with Game Rant, we were able to chat with Thames about his upcoming role in The Black Phone and his experience working with Ethan Hawke.

Game Rant: The Black Phone has already begun its festival circuit. It has a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. How did you react to this critical reception?

Mason Thames: The night before, I was pretty nervous. But seeing how everybody was super positive about it, made me feel good. The work we did was incredible.

GR: How did playing this character challenge you as an actor?

Thames: It was definitely hard, you know, digging deep down where Finney is, I mean, how scared he probably is. I really just had to dig down and think about what it'd be like without my family, and what he's going through. It's was really hard for me but I got to know Finney very well, and the story he goes through— which is terrifying.

GR: You have mentioned that you work really close with Ethan Hawke's character. Can you talk to me about how you built that chemistry?

Thames: I mean, he's a great person and he's an even greater actor. Seeing how he just throws himself into the character of The Grabber which is so terrifying, it's nothing like him in real life. He is such a nice person. After every take, he'd be like like, 'Are you alright?' and he'd give me like a noogie on the head. He's an incredible person.

GR: That sounds great. I'm sure that the debriefing process was very important. Personally, do you like scary movies?

Thames: I've loved them from a young age. I'm gonna tell this story: So, my mom, when I was five and my sister was six, she'd put my sister and I on the couch, and to get us to be quiet, she'd put on a horror movie. I think it was Halloween. Yeah, I remember from that day, I've just loved horror movies. They just really scared me and I just fell in love with them.

GR: That's awesome. Can you name your top three favorite scary movies?

Thames: I love Halloween, it's one of my favorites. And Sinister, I remember watching with my brother in the movie theaters. I came home so scared after that movie. Working with Ethan [Hawke] and Scott [Derrickson] is just, I mean, it's a dream come true. They're incredible. Scott is an incredible filmmaker, and he knows how to make his actors feel safe. He knows how to make them look good.

Mason Thames in The Black Phone

GR: Do you have any like celebrity idols? Is there anyone who inspires you as an actor?

Thames: I take note of every movie I watch. There are incredible actors everywhere. But I really took note from Leonardo DiCaprio. I remember watching his movies and he's just an incredible actor.

GR: Oh, that's awesome. What's your favorite movie by him?

Thames: I like Shutter Island. I also remember watching Training Day. And the bathtub scene where Ethan was just like freaking out and stuff. I had my eyes wide-open the entire time. That was one of the movie scenes that definitely made me.

GR: Moving on from here, what do you want to do next? What's your dream role?

Thames: I'm a bit of a comic book fan. So, I would love to be in a superhero movie.

GR: Are you DC or Marvel? Both? Do you have a dream superhero you want to play?

Thames: I've always had a strong connection with Robin, I'd love to play him. Also, Spider-Man or Harry Osborn.

GR: To wrap up our conversation, how are you hoping fans react when The Black Phone premieres?

Thames: I know they're gonna be creeped out. Ethan definitely will sell that. I just hope they enjoy it as much as I did making. I mean, it's a great film.

The Black Phone will release in theaters on February 4, 2022.
