Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has dealt with controversies, injuries, and, of course, the unfortunate passing of the widely loved Chadwick Boseman. Now, director Ryan Coogler has revealed what the original plot of the sequel was originally planned to be.

Black Panther is a Marvel superhero from the fictional nation of Wakanda, which is in located in Africa. The character was widely celebrated throughout the comic book community prior to his cinematic debut, but the popularity spiked after the 2018 self-titled Marvel film. Marvel Studios' films typically do a great job at introducing relatively unknown characters to the world and end up making them mainstream icons. Black Panther brought the world of Wakanda to moviegoers around the world, and now many new characters are set to be introduced to a wide audience, including Riri 'Ironheart' Williams, who will be played by Dominique Thorne.

Director Coogler is coming back to work on Black Panther 2, which is actually going through a time skip. The director revealed what the previous sequel script was set to entail prior to the passing of Boseman. "The script we wrote before Chadwick passed was very much rooted in T’Challa’s perspective," the director said to The Hollywood Reporter. "It was a massive movie but also simultaneously a character study that delved deeply into his psyche and situation." Nate Moore who is the VP of production & development went on to say, "The Black Panther has existed in Wakanda for centuries, so the notion of someone else picking up the mantle didn’t seem inorganic."

There is currently a debate about what should be done with the role and even in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the characters seem to be divided as to who should take up the mantle. "... once that had to become a reality, then it was, 'OK, what makes the most sense for the story? Who actually makes the most sense to take this thing on?'" Moore continues. "All of the characters in the film have a different idea of who should don the mantle and why."

It's currently a sea of division regarding what should happen to the role of T'Challa. Many want the role to be retired out of respect for Boseman's performance, but others believe the Black Panther should be recast in order to honor Boseman's memory and also not deprive comic fans of the character T'Challa. There's too much story yet to be told that never saw the light of day.

With the introduction of the multiverse, the possibilities of using this character and representing what he means for everybody are endless. Hopefully the person chosen to be Boseman's successor in Black Panther 2 is one who honors the memory and wishes of both him, his family, and his loved ones.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is slated for a November 11, 2022, release date.
