It looks like the long promised mod tools for the PC version of Call of Duty: Black Ops will finally be made available next month. Talk of the mod tools has been relatively quiet up until now — which is very surprising considering they were a major selling point for the PC version of the game.
Said to be hitting some time in May, these mod tools should help even the disparity that exists between the PC and console versions of the game. While the Xbox 360 is still king — receiving any released map packs a month earlier — the PC version has been dead last when it comes to receiving new maps.
With a new map pack announced for early May (for the Xbox 360), it would make sense that the mod tools would hit around the same time. Hopefully, with access to mod tools, the sting of watching Black Ops players enjoy new zombie and multiplayer maps will be lessened.
Unfortunately, since this was only announced via the 140 characters of Twitter, there isn’t much information to go on. Gamers should expect that, as May nears, Treyarch will begin to detail the mod tools, perhaps in an effort to secure a double dip of an already high selling title.
What gamers really might be wondering is why Activision and Treyarch decided to hold off on releasing these mod tools for so long? Sure, PC gamers had access to dedicated servers that might have alleviated a lot of the slowdown that arises from playing a hugely popular video game like Black Ops, but that was only one part of a larger selling point.
After having to endure last pick of new maps and broken promises, what is to say that the PC community for Black Ops hasn’t moved onto other, more PC focused titles like Crysis 2? Still, it’s better late than never, and if these mod tools can drastically alter the way gamers see Black Ops, like eliminating the killstreaks, that might be incentive enough to hold out for the mod tools’ release.
Will the release of the mod tools for Black Ops on the PC help increase traffic or revenue for that version? Do you think releasing these mod tools so late after launch hurt Black Ops on the PC?
