One Million 'Black Ops' Players on Xbox Live Within Hours of Launch

Black Ops Million Players Xbox Live

Call of Duty: Black Ops has been available for the better part of a day now, and though Activision has yet to release any sales figures for the game, it's a safe bet that gamers are positively devouring the massively anticipated title. However, one measurement of ths game's success has been tabulated and revealed: more than one million gamers have already played Call of Duty: Black Ops over Xbox Live.

Even more impressive then the raw number of players is the speed with which that figure was reached. At roughly 2:00 AM PST, just two hours after the game's midnight launch on the West Coast, Treyarch Community Manager Josh Olin tweeted the following message:

"Am I getting solid intel? Is there really almost 1,000,000 players on Xbox LIVE right now??"

Of course, Xbox Live has a dedicated community of players, and the Call of Duty games have long been the most played on the service. Black Ops, with its new Wager Matches and Zombie Mode, was bound to make a big splash, but a million players in just a few hours? That's impressive.

By now, that count may well have been exceeded several times over. Needless to say, the number of people playing the game on Xbox live likely represents only a fraction of the total number of players who purchased the game for the Xbox 360, and does not account in any way for the number of copies sold to PS3 and PC players.

Make no mistake - sales for Black Ops are simply jaw-dropping, and it's difficult to imagine that the game will have much trouble blowing past the record set by 2010's biggest entertainment launch so far: Halo: Reach's single day sales total of $200+ million dollars. Will it go on to surpass Modern Warfare 2's single day sales record of $310 million? Activision's sales forcasts for the game have been somewhat conservative. In any case, we'll know soon enough.

Ranters, we know that you're playing Black Ops. Were you among the million players on Xbox Live just after midnight? What do you think of the multiplayer? How about the campaign?

Call of Duty: Black Ops is available now for Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, DS, and PC.
