While players can jump into the free trial period of Blackout for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 right now, developer Treyarch hasn't taken its foot off the gas when it comes to innovating on its already popular battle royale mode. At this time, the free trial period for Blackout is being complimented by a new mode, called Down But Not Out, which allows for respawning during Quad matches. However another new game mode will soon be added for a limited time, further putting a spin on the norms of Blackout.

At the end of Down But Not Out's limited playtime, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4's Blackout will be adding a new mode, called Ambush. According to a premature update on the Call of Duty Companion App, the new mode will strictly limit what weapons players can use in Blackout, with sniper rifles and melee being the only means of taking out opposing players. The leak has since been confirmed by Treyarch, and expands upon the default playlist of Quads (teams of four), Duos (teams of two), and Solo.

The announcement also included some helpful tips for players who plan to test out the upcoming mode's release. Recommended perks players should use include Dead Silence, Skulker, and Outlander. Since stealth looks to play a prominent role based on the skeleton list of available weapons, sneaking around and silent takedowns should be expected more often. As far as making use of the Outlander perk, another new feature of Ambush is the map's collapsing circle will no longer shrink in phases, but rather continuously close in on the competitors.

While the inspiration for Blackout can be credited to the likes of Playerunknown's Battlegrounds and Fortnite, it appears the desire to change the formula in order to keep things fresh has also been adopted by developer Treyarch. Last month, Fortnite released its 14 days of Fortnite event, which offered a rotation of new modes for a limited time, and Treyarch looks to be doing the same. Knowing Blackout is adding a brand new mode immediately following the end of Down But Not Out being playable, it shows the forward thinking that Treyarch needs to get as many people playing Blackout as possible.
