October was a massive month for games, with major new titles like Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, Black Ops 4, and Red Dead Redemption 2 all competing for gamers' wallets throughout the month. Just about everything released last month was highly-anticipated, and gamers definitely proved their enthusiasm by spending a jaw-dropping $1.5 billion on games and hardware last month alone, but which game earned the biggest piece of that pie?

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 was the highest selling game last month, which shouldn't come as a big surprise. It's the largest IP on the market and launching in the middle of October gave it plenty of time to rake in sales throughout the month. It has quickly risen to the second-highest selling game of the last 12 months, the first being Call of Duty: WWII. This means that Black Ops 4 not having a single-player campaign didn't have as much of a negative effect on sales as some people thought it would.

The runner-up for October was Red Dead Redemption 2, the open world cowboy game that launched on October 26th. Considering the game's late launch date, it's impressive that it managed to make so much money in such a short time period. While second place is impressive, all things considered, it shouldn't come as much of a surprise either, as a recent survey showed that Black Ops 4 was more anticipated than Red Dead Redemption 2.

Compared to last October, the industry had a healthy amount of growth, increasing from $894 million to $1.5 billion, which is a 73% increase in revenue. Hardware was also up an additional 26% from last year, meaning people still haven't stopped buying new consoles despite rumors of new systems from both Sony and Microsoft beginning to circulate.

It'll be interesting to see which games top the list for November as both Pokémon Let's Go and Battlefield V released this month. Odds are Black Ops 4 will continue to dominate, but Red Dead Redemption 2 might be able to give it a run for its money.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
