Call of Duty: Black Ops 4's Blackout battle royale mode has a diverse pool of playable characters for players to choose from, including the popular multiplayer character Ruin. However, like the other Blackout characters, there are steps players have to complete if they hope to unlock Ruin and add him to their roster.

Like other playable characters in Blackout, Ruin has a special item on the map that players have to find before they can worry about his challenges, with his being the Punching Mitts. The Punching Mitts reportedly spawn in three different areas around the map: on top of the Asylum, on top of the Lighthouse, and on top of the crane at the Construction Site. Players will want to land in one of those three areas if they hope to collect the Punching Mitts before any other players get their paws on them.

Any Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 fan that has unlocked a playable character in Blackout will know that finding the character-specific item is just half the battle. The next step to unlocking Ruin is getting a close-quarters kill, which some have mistakenly assumed must be a melee attack. On the contrary, any close-quarters kill will satisfy the requirements of this challenge, though killing an enemy with a melee strike is certainly still an option.

Ruin is just one of the two dozen plus playable characters Black Ops 4 fans can unlock in Blackout. There are other multiplayer Specialists in the lineup as well, including Seraph, who requires players to find her Annihilator gun in Firing Range and use it to get a kill in the match.

Besides multiplayer Specialists, Blackout also features Zombies characters as well as "icons" from past Black Ops games. By finding specific items and completing certain requirements, Black Ops 4 players can unlock the likes of Alex Mason, Woods, Reznov, and more.

Future updates to Black Ops 4's Blackout mode may add even more playable characters to the lineup or tweak the way existing characters are unlocked. However, as of this writing, the method listed above is how players will unlock Ruin in Blackout.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
