Treyarch has always been big on cosmetic customization options in the Call of Duty franchise, and the studio is keen to continue expanding on this with the upcoming launch of Black Ops 4. One week ago the studio confirmed that Signature Weapons would be introduced to the series, allowing gamers to complete a set of in-game challenges in order to unlock cosmetic variants of standard weapons. Each signature weapon will have multiple cosmetic rewards as challenges are completed, with the final step being a Master Craft ultimate rendition of the weapon which is sure to be a badge of pride for those who unlock them.

The weapons that Treyarch revealed featured creative designs that are sure to stand out from the crowd, though it wasn't known which in-game guns would get signature variants. Speaking to Black Ops 4 game designer Tony Flame at the Toronto Fan Expo, Game Rant has been able to confirm that every weapon available at launch will feature a signature weapon cosmetic variant.

It's important to note that the signature weapons don't add any in-game advantages to those who unlock them, and are a purely cosmetic reward for those who go progress through the challenges that Treyarch dishes out.

For gamers looking for other ways to make their weapons stand out, the Black Ops 4 beta inadvertently revealed that the paint shop will be making a return to the franchise. Here, players can create custom paint jobs for their weapons with a fairly extensive editor that allows for various patterns, colors, icons, and letters. Given that this amount of creative freedom will occasionally lead to some unsavory content, Black Ops 4 will have a report button so gamers can flag the inevitable influx of inappropriate paint jobs. Beyond this, the game will have a toggle switch to disable user generated content from showing up entirely, replacing them with regular weapon skins instead.

The first signature weapon to be revealed is for the MX9 submachine gun, which is unlocked by purchasing the Deluxe, Pro, or Mystery edition of the game. To unlock the Master Craft version of the signature weapon (essentially, the most snazzy version of the signature weapon), fans will have to complete a series of in-game challenges. In a similar vein, the Strife pistol's signature weapon can be unlocked by pre-ordering the title from GameStop, but its blinged-out Master Craft version will only be unlocked by another set of in-game challenges. Presumably, the rest of the signature weapons will be unlocked by more accessible means than pre-order bonuses or retail exclusives.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is set to launch on PC, PS4, and Xbox One this October 12, 2018.
