Sony announced Thursday morning that it is expanding its partnership with Activision regarding PS4 content exclusivity in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. According to Sony, all new Black Ops 4 post-launch content, across Multiplayer, Zombies, and Blackout, will feature a period of exclusivity on PS4 before coming to other platforms. Activision has confirmed that all post-launch content released for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will feature a 7-day exclusivity period on PS4.

From there, Sony provided examples of the kind of post-launch content players can look forward to in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, beyond the already announced Season Pass. According to Sony, PS4 Black Ops 4 players can look forward to first access to content including new maps, specialists, and seasonal events. All post-launch updates for Blackout, the battle royale mode in Black Ops 4, are also implied to come to PS4 first.

Here are the four specific bullet points cited by Sony that Black Ops 4 players can look forward to later this year, following launch:

  • Nuketown: This fan-favorite map returns in November in an all-new take.
  • Specialists: The first of several new characters will debut in December.
  • Blackout: Launch day is only the start; Blackout will continue to evolve after launch with regular map updates, expansions and new Blackout modes.
  • Events: Seasonal, weekly, and time-limited events bringing new game modes and content to players.

The Activision and Sony partnership for exclusive content also includes the Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Black Ops Pass, naturally. Previous Season Passes have been available in separate packs, but Black Ops 4's pass is an all-or-none affair. The pass features four Zombies "experiences," 12 multiplayer maps, and four exclusive Blackout characters. Players can purchase the Black Ops Pass after launch or as part of one of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4's various launch bundles.

While the expansion of exclusivity to cover all post-launch content, free or otherwise, may seem frustrating for Xbox and PC players there is some good news. Prior exclusivity deals made Call of Duty post-launch content exclusive for 30 days, but the new deal limits exclusivity to only 7 days. Just a one-week wait will hopefully be more tolerable for dedicated Call of Duty players who aren't on PS4, while PS4 players will remain content with their continued early access.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 releases October 12 for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
