While traversing the moonlit fields and forests of 1800s Eastern Europe, new witches in Black Book will have to battle a fair number of demons every night. This unrelenting and cryptic game by Russian indie developer Morteshka requires gamers to steel themselves to face all manner of horrors that lurk in the dark.

One of the trickiest encounters in the Prologue will appear before Vasilisa, the young witch that the player is controlling, as she is approaching the location of the map's main task in the north. The sinisterly described Gorodishensky Ravine is well known for being very dangerous, however, it can be a perfect place to test out one's deck before confronting this chapter's boss a bit later on.

Directly south of the Miller's windmill possessed by chorts, players will find a dotted line indicating a hidden path that leads to Gorodishensky Ravine.

Be sure to read the area's description before heading to this spot, as it heavily implies demonic combat will be involved. Healing before entering the ravine would be a good idea, even if Vasilisa isn't missing much HP.

Furthermore, an offensive deck will be much more helpful in the Gorodishensky Ravine than a defensive one, so be sure to pack a bunch of high-damage word cards.

About The Demons

After a bit of text, players will have no choice but to initiate combat with a large fiend who will summon a small ally to aid them against Vasilisa.

The large foe is capable of taking out the player at their current level in a single demonic blow, which gives due credit to the ravine's ominous description. Thankfully, its severe attack has a long wind-up, which means that players will have 3 turns to figure out how to deal with it.

The smaller enemy seems to be a common lesser chort who will aim minor swipes at the player while occasionally removing any of their buffs.

Which Demon To Attack First

While it will be tempting to try and take out the pesky little demon first, as it has less initial HP, this is not a good idea as it will waste a precious turn that players will likely need to fell the bigger enemy before they can launch their mighty assault.

At this point in the game, it's unlikely that the player will have enough defensive cards to guard well against the big demon's heavy hits, however, players should have enough offensive ones to take them down in 3 turns if one has adjusted their deck for more power.

Ignore the little demon and unleash as much damage as often as one can on the big demon, who will do nothing but charge their attack for 3 turns. With solid planning and a bit of luck while drawing cards, witches should be able to unleash enough spells to destroy the larger threat before they can attack. Afterward, taking care of the lesser one will be easy, which will likely be followed by Vasilisa collecting the rewards for this hard-won battle before moving on to the windmill up north.
