Dwayne Johnson announced he would be playing Black Adam way back in 2014 on Twitter. Since that day, fans of the character hoped the DC project would not get canceled. The day has come when fans finally get their first look at the change in the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe. In 2022, Dwayne Johnson’s physique is in a godly position, where he does not want or need the use of a muscle suit for his costume.

With the trailer of Black Adam making its way online, the latest film in the DC Extended Universe has given viewers their first look at the titular character, and the many supporting characters of the DC Comics universe that come out into the playing field of this latest DC adventure.

8 The Justice Society of America

Viewers of the Black Adam trailer might be wondering who the colorful cast of costumed beings is. These characters are none other than The Justice Society of America, a group that predates The Justice League. This team seems to deviate somewhat from the comics, as the JSA was a wartime group of superheroes that consisted of Doctor Fate, Jay Garrick’s The Flash, Hawkman, and Alan Scott’s The Green Lantern. These characters have been involved in some of DC's best animated movies.

Since Black Adam is set in the modern day, it is not surprising that the trailer offers us a look at the new and reformed Justice Society, which includes newer heroes like Atom Smasher and Cyclone. However, these heroes are no strangers to the team in the comics, and offer even more interest to the cinematic live-action debut.

7 Hawkman

“In this world, there are heroes and there are villains. Heroes don’t kill people.” This line is spoken by the hawk-helmed man, who stares down the intimidating Black Adam. This character is none other than Hawkman, played by Aldis Hodge.

There have been many iterations of Hawkman, but the most popular and well-known is that of Carter Hall, whom Hodge is most likely playing here. He sports his iconic wings and his Thanagarian Mace, which is made of Nth Metal, one of the most powerful substances in the DC Universe which is its own story in itself.

6 The Importance Of Adrianna Tomaz

A woman in civilian clothing appears in the Black Adam trailer, played by Sarah Shahi. This is Adrianna Tomaz, who is better known in the DC Comics as Isis. Isis later becomes the wife of Black Adam, and it is more than likely that this character will be the love interest of the film.

When wielding the Amulet of Isis, Adrianna can harness the power of the forces of nature itself. What’s important about Isis isn’t only her physical powers, but her emotional strength and bond with Black Adam. Due to Isis’ compassion for Black Adam, he becomes more of an anti-hero than a complete villain.

5 The Debut Of Doctor Fate

Doctor Fate is no stranger to live action. He has appeared in the Arrowverse and on Smallville, but this marks the first time that Doctor Fate has appeared in the DC Extended Universe. Played by Pierce Brosnan, the helmet of Doctor Fate unlocks the powers of the Lord of Order, Nabu.

Kent Nelson is Doctor Fate, and in simplified terms, he is the DC Comics equivalent to Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange. Viewers see the character utilizing mirror patterns in a very stylized way, much like what has been seen from Doctor Strange before. The character has immense potential in the DCEU, due to his popularity and stories from the comics.

4 The Villains, Intergang

Not much is known about the plot of Black Adam, or who the “big bad” of the film will be. From what has been seen so far, it is clear that the villain group known as Intergang will be around to cause a stir. These people can be seen on hovercrafts, technology that is a mix of genius and alien. Sarah Shahi described Intergang as an “evil, malicious group,” so it’s safe to assume their role is rather large.

Intergang is famed in the comics for its connection to the New God, Darkseid. The Anti-Life seeking New God houses valuable technology in his world of Apokolips, and even provided Intergang with such technology when they worked for him Pre-Crisis in the comics. It will be interesting to see if Darkseid is mentioned after Zack Snyder's Justice League and if a crisis event will fix the DCEU.

3 Shiruta Electronics

It is unknown whether the name of Shiruta Electronics is a mere Easter egg, or will play a bigger role in Black Adam than first thought. Adrianna Tomaz drives a Shiruta Electronics truck, and the name is famed for not only being the capital of the fictional city of Kahndaq, but it is the name of Teth-Adam’s first wife.

Teth-Adam’s first wife died centuries ago in Egypt, and Black Adam soon named the capital of Kahndaq after her, to honor her legacy. It will be interesting to see if Black Adam will react to seeing her name on the side of a truck.

2 Kahndaq

The fictional city that appears in the Black Adam trailer is a far cry from Marvel Studios’ Wakanda, as seen in Black Panther. It does not seem prosperous and brimming with opportunity, and instead is filled with corruption, ruin, and crime.

This city is the home of Black Adam and the kingdom over which he rules over in the comics. It will be interesting to see if the DCEU opening scene is in this city, as nothing comes before Kahndaq in Black Adam’s eyes. Fans speculate on how the appearance of his home after his imprisonment will influence his decisions of heroism or villainy.

1 Black Adam’s Origin

From what fans have gathered from the first trailer of Black Adam, it appears likely that the film will serve as somewhat of an origin story, with flashbacks to the past with Teth-Adam's time as a slave in the fictional Egyptian city of Kahndaq.

Teth-Adam was given godly powers provided to him by the wizard Shazam, who in the DCEU is played by Djimon Hounsou. After his family is killed, he uses Shazam’s powers to seek revenge against the rulers of Kahndaq and is punished by Shazam with imprisonment for a millennium. The film seems to take place after his freedom, in which he still holds his immense power.

Black Adam will hit theaters on October 21, 2022.
