As evidenced by the Mass Effect franchise's critical reception, the majority of the entries within the action role-playing game's series are placed in quite high regard when one looks at the ranked review scores of every BioWare game made thus far. With this being the case, some fans might be excited to learn that a new Mass Effect game is apparently being worked on in some capacity within the video game developer's studios.

This much has been revealed in a recent report shared by Kotaku, with Jason Schreier having written that after Mass Effect was "put on ice in 2017" following BioWare's release of what many considered to be a disappointing entry with Mass Effect: Andromeda, the next game in the franchise "has since been warmed back up". However, it's currently unclear at this point in time as to how far along in development the supposed new game in the science fiction series actually is.

While many may have presumed a new Mass Effect game to be a prospect that would occur well into the distant future following the generally poor reception of Mass Effect: Andromeda, it's clear that some current BioWare heads have not totally given up on the franchise just yet. As it so happens, BioWare’s Mark Darrah and Casey Hudson declared about a couple of months ago that the video game development studio is "definitely not done" with Mass Effect, with Hudson saying the property is "very much alive" in his mind.

Since there presently isn't a definitive notion of the direction in which this new Mass Effect game could go, it's uncertain as to what kind of story the next installment could tell. With this being the case, the possibilities seem to be open ended, as the new ME title could be spun out of some story threads of Mass Effect 3, it could be a direct followup to Andromeda, or it could even be released as a standalone project that sets itself apart from prior games in the series.

Whatever the case may be regarding this new Mass Effect game, we will simply have to wait and see what BioWare has in store for the intellectual property down the line. Until then, many fans of the studio are likely keeping their fingers crossed that BioWare manages to shake off the negativity surrounding Anthem by succeeding with Dragon Age 4.

The most recent entry in the Mass Effect franchise is Mass Effect: Andromeda, which is available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
