BioWare Co-Founder Addresses ‘Mass Effect 3’ Endings; Promises DLC

By | 5 years ago

Mass Effect 3 has sparked much debate among fans and industry specialists alike since it came to store shelves weeks ago. With a highly controversial ending leaving many fans petitioning for alternatives, nobody was quite sure if change akin to the Fallout 3 ending was possible – or if players simply had to accept what was in the script. BioWare has already stated that they’ve been listening to fan complaints, though they’ve been sending mixed messages on if they plan to change anything.

Today, fans of the Mass Effect franchise finally have clarification on the direction BioWare is heading regarding the end of Shepard’s trilogy.

BioWare co-founder Dr. Ray Muzyka, who founded the company back in 1995, has written an open letter to fans of the Mass Effect franchise to detail how he and the development team have been gathering, considering and ultimately evaluating the feedback they’ve received since the game came out less than a month ago. You can read the full letter here, but for the moment we’ll be focusing on his statements on end-game DLC.

Muzyka confirmed that downloadable content addressing the issue of closure is being worked on by the team at BioWare, though he didn’t touch on the issue of the ending itself, which many fans wish to have changed. While that issue is still up in the air, Muzyka was quick to congratulate the developers of the series for a job well done before giving answers to the issue of the month:

Building on their research, Exec Producer Casey Hudson and the team are hard at work on a number of game content initiatives that will help answer the questions, providing more clarity for those seeking further closure to their journey. You’ll hear more on this in April.  We’re working hard to maintain the right balance between the artistic integrity of the original story while addressing the fan feedback we’ve received.

With authoritative information finally arriving in what has been a few weeks of complete speculation, it’s good to know that BioWare certainly values the opinions of its fans, and is willing to take the time to try and appease them. Of course, Muzyka didn’t bring up the cost of said ‘game content initiatives’ which will give fans the answers they want, so there may be more controversy ahead yet. We’ll certainly keep you posted as this information trickles out from BioWare in April.

Lastly, Ray brought up a great point which fans of the series should take heed to. While many of the people contacting BioWare had legitimate points, like wanting to find out what happened to everyone, personal attacks on employees of the developer are completely uncalled for and unacceptable. It’s one thing to petition for a different ending, but its another to insult a programmer who simply did his job. Folks, there’s a right way and a wrong way to petition for change – do it the paragon way.

What do you think about Ray Muzyka’s open letter? Are you happy to hear about closure DLC? Do you think this indicates they may change the ending itself?
