BioShock Infinite is a brilliant game. Yes, some people didn't enjoy its slimmed-down gameplay mechanics and on-rails nature, but no one can deny that it told an engaging and thoughtful story.

That said, the story it tells is unbelievably wacky, and we need to suspend an extraordinary amount of disbelief in order to buy into it. In that way, the game has also been criticized, as many people preffered the tighter, more, uh, "realistic" story of the first BioShock.

These are ten things that make absolutely no sense about BioShock Infinite. That said, we still love the game, and this is all in good fun.

10 How Does Columbia...Work?

OK, this is definitely one of those things we're supposed to just go with, and we can accept that. But let's pretend that we're in this universe. How on Earth does Columbia exist? The Lutece twins give some nonsense explanation of course, but really, the entire city is basically kept afloat by massive balloons. Just like Rapture and the ocean, the entire concept behind a city in the sky is sheer lunacy. Then again, this is a science fiction story, so we'll just ignore all that and move on.

9 How Do The Citizens Breathe?

And for that matter, how do the citizens of Columbia even breathe? When Booker is first shot in Columbia, he is clearly seen rising FAR above the clouds. Presumably Columbia is also so high up that you aren't able to see it with the naked eye on a clear day, so it has to be really up there. So how do the human civilians manage to breathe at such an insanely high altitude? People need breathing apparatuses while climbing small mountains for crying out loud, never mind sailing halfway to space.

8 How Do The Tears Work?

We're not going to get into the science behind the tears, because we all know that that's a bunch of science fiction nonsense as well, and we don't want to spend too much time analyzing things that aren't meant to be analyzed. But in world, how exactly do the tears work? Does traveling through a tear merge two dimensions? Do you time travel to another location, leaving your "original" body in the opening location? Does traveling through a tear overwrite the original timeline and reality, as it seems to suggest with the gunsmith? We have no idea.

7 The Respawn Room

We understand the need for a video game to have respawns. After all, if the protagonist permanently died, then that wouldn't make for a very fun and engaging video game, now, would it? That said, the respawns in this game don't make a lick of sense. Supposedly Booker is brought back from the dead, somehow, using the respawn rooms. There's an interesting fan theory that Elizabeth is actually pulling different Bookers from alternate realities and that respawn rooms are bringing in a Booker from another dimension that DIDN'T make the fatal mistake that you as the player made. And that's pretty darned cool.

6 Why Does Elizabeth Have The Ability To Tear?

OK, let's dig into the ending here, because let's be honest, there's a lot to question and unpack here. At the end of the game, Elizabeth drowns Booker so that Booker never becomes Comstock. OK, fair enough. But if Booker never becomes Comstock, that means that Comstock never existed, which means Elizabeth (or Anna) was never abducted by the Lutece twins, which means she never had her finger severed by the tear, which means she shouldn't have tear-opening powers. In fact, the entire story of the game never should have happened in the first place...

5 The Drowning Timeline

OK, so this game has us believe that there are infinite, literally infinite, timelines, all of which contain their own branching paths and outcomes. OK, cool. And in one of these timelines, Elizabeth uses her time warp powers to drown Booker. But by the game's own logic, shouldn't that just be ONE timeline? In other words, isn't there another timeline where Booker still takes the baptism without Elizabeth? Or better yet, isn't there another timeline where Booker decides to fight back against Elizabeth and refuse his sacrifice? It doesn't seem right that you can do one specific thing in one specific timeline in order to eliminate the literally infinite others.

4 Wouldn't It Make More Sense To Kill The Luteces?

To prevent Comstock from existing, Booker decides to drown all the Bookers that took the baptism. Ignoring all the problems that that creates, we'll go with it. But wouldn't be immensely easier for Elizabeth to kill the Lutece twins? Why couldn't she just go back in time and kill them before they created the tear technology? Sure, Elizabeth isn't portrayed as a murderer, but if she's willing to literally kill her own father, chances are she'd be able to muster up the courage to blow up the Lutece lab or something.

3 How Does Elizabeth Become An Omniscient God?

By the end of the game, Elizabeth is essentially God. She seems to exist outside of time and space itself, and she seemingly stops Booker from even existing in various timelines by preventing a key decision from being made. But how is this possible, exactly? All Elizabeth has is the ability to open tears between different realities. How is it that she can suddenly see all possible realities and all possible decisions and all possible outcomes and all possible whatever? She's not an omniscient being. She's just a girl who can open tears between dimensions.

2 How Does Killing Booker Prevent The Future?

This one kind of goes hand in hand with the whole "how do the tears work?" question. By killing Booker, Elizabeth completely erases the timeline in which Comstock exists. OK, but that's not really how time works. By this point, Booker had already made that decision and Comstock has already existed. His death doesn't change the fact that these decisions and outcomes have already been made. Yet, it does. So, does that mean that Elizabeth's tear powers have the ability to alter time and space itself? Man, our heads hurt.

1 Why Did Booker's Voice Change?

The thing about plot twists is that it puts the entire rest of the story into a different context. And when one questions this, one realizes that Comstock's voice is drastically different than Booker's, despite being the same person. And it's not that Comstock is older than Booker, it's just that the tear devices have messed with this physical appearance and fertility. Sure, it's possible that the devices altered his voice somehow as well, but that's just fan conjecture with no in-text proof or evidence to support it.
