Biomutant is Experiment 101's upcoming project, an action-oriented RPG where players assume the role of a custom-created mutant. Originally announced in 2017, the game has undergone a couple of delays as the team has decided to take more and more time to create the best possible version of the game.

Since the recent gameplay showcases, many gamers have started to compare Biomutant to be another take on the wildly successful Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. While not entirely true or false, there are a number of similarities that could very well be the cause of these comparisons.

What's Known About Biomutant

Biomutant has been famously touted as being a "post-apocalyptic Kung-Fu fable RPG." The game starts off with the player creating their own character, which can be a mixture of 6 different strands of animal DNA, mostly rodents. In addition to this, players also get to choose their starting skill points which dictate how the character will look and play. The developer has also stated that the character's physique will have an effect on stats.

The story hasn't been revealed much, but from what's known, it's about saving the world from an apocalypse that looks to be related to some kind of oil flood. Players will also be able to ride on various vehicles-including what looks like a horse and a glider of sorts in addition to some others. Crafting weapons and items are also expected to be an integral part of the experience as well.

Biomutant's gameplay shows that the player's character will also have a couple of tricks up their sleeve, which the game calls the Psy abilities. Not much has been shown about them except what looks like a telekinesis ability that allows the player to throw off enemies and a stun move of sorts. The game has been said to have a non-linear story where players can choose to explore the world at their own pace and take up quests accordingly.

Where The Breath of the Wild Comparisons Come From

As much as some gamers are adamant to compare every open-world game with a grassy plain to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, these Zelda comparisons aren't entirely unjustified here. On the surface level, both of these games look to have somewhat similar art styles, although Biomutant is a bizarre mix of realistic and cartoony art style as opposed to Zelda's cell-shaded visuals. The telekinesis move also looks to be strikingly similar to the one players saw in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Also, the heavily touted non-linear open-world is sure to draw many comparisons to Zelda, which the game bolsters by providing a narrative setup that could very well suit itself to this style of gameplay.

That being said, much of the combat looks to be quite different in both of these games. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild features a simple-yet-effective combat system where players are asked to perfect the dance of hitting and dodging away enemies alongside using the environment and abilities to their advantage. On the other hand, Biomutant's combat system looks to be far more acrobatic and focused on performing flashy moves, which the developer has stated to be similar to Devil May Cry games.

Since Biomutant has been in development for quite some time now, it isn't entirely justified to call it another Zelda-clone. The elements that are somewhat similar to games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild look to suit themselves very nicely to Biomutant, which ultimately is a good thing. Hopefully, gamers are treated to yet another great open-world this year in the form of Biomutant.

Biomutant is set to release on May 25th, 2021, for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
