The story of Biomutant is threefold. There's the storylines of the tribe wars, the end of the World, and the Toxanol corporation. The player has the choice to spare the world or letting it die, as told by the protagonist's friend, Out-Of-Date.

Players will go on to discover some deep-rooted secrets about the "Old World." They'll unravel the reasons for the planet's death while battling the main antagonist Lupa-Lupin, by whom players get to know the personal stories of the two characters. There are so many layers and so little time – which means many players missed a few details.

WARNING: Spoilers Ahead!

10 What Happened To Earth & Humans?

Biomutant Planet

According to the backstory of Biomutant, humans spent years dumping toxic chemicals into the ocean and landfills, hoping they would deteriorate one day. Thus, humans and the Toxanol corporation caused the planet's animals and plants to mutate.

Because of the high toxicity of the planet, it became inhabitable by humans. They fled the planet in spaceships called "Arks", and never looked back. Since their departure, nature has begun to heal itself, and animals grew to be smarter and stronger.

9 The Mother's Story

Biomutant Tribes Unity

One of the most interesting and personal storylines in the game is that of the protagonist's mother. Her story not only ties into the main antagonist and the tribal wars, but is the key to the protagonist's character as a whole.

The six tribe leaders, called Sifu, were all the protagonist's mother's disciples. She was a leader who unified all Sifu, and inspired the Wung-Fu way that is present in the game. Fueled by rage, she sought to kill all carnivorous Lupa-Lupins. This act was the catalyst to what players see in the game's main story.

8 The Domino Effect

Biomutant Combat

The protagonist's mother's actions cause a series of events in the game's history. Her rage-fueled killing spree aimed at the Lupa-Lupins backfired when she killed the future antagonist's mother in front of him as a cub. Although she spared the cub, he sought revenge years later. This led to the loss of the protagonist's parents, leading the protagonist down a path of violence, and launching the tribal wars later.

This domino effect makes the story that much more blurry. People tend to side which whoever the narrator is, as all characters in the game have tragic backstories that justify their actions. Every motivation has just as blurred lines as in reality.

7 The Tribal War

Biomutant Tribes

As mentioned before, the main character's mother started a series of unfortunate events. This led to the six Sifu each creating their own tribe and eventually going against each other in regards to their beliefs and goals. Now, the end of the World and the existence of the World-Eaters have created a new gap between these tribes.

Some tribes choose the path of light, looking for a way to stop these World-Eaters in order to save their planet. Others follow the path of darkness, allowing World-Eaters to gnaw at the root of the Tree of Life, speeding up the destruction of the world and letting nature take its course. It's up to the player to choose which tribe they want to join, and which path they want to walk.

6 Lupa-Lupin's Father's Fate Is Unknown

Biomutant Lupa-Lupin Combat

It's clear that Lupa-Lupin was left to fend for himself after the main character's mother killed his own. But it is not clearly stated what happened to Lupa-Lupin's father. Players logically assume that he was too killed by the protagonist's mother.

Her goal was to kill all Lupa-Lupins, and according to her, the antagonist was the last one left alive. Still, players everywhere are beginning to sympathize with the antagonist and would love to dive into his backstory in (hopefully) upcoming DLCs or games.

5 The Tree Of Life Remains Mysterious

Tree of Life in Biomutant

According to the story of the Biomutant world, the planet is, in fact, Earth, which has been abandoned by humans after they've destroyed it with toxic waste. This led to the evolution of entirely new species, both plants and animals, and presumably even the "Tree of Life."

But the nature and age of this tree aren't explained within the gameplay, and players are dying to know the origin of this alien tree. Was it part of the utopian human civilization, or is it a byproduct of the same mutation that other species went through? Whatever the case, the existence, and health of this particular plant are crucial for the planet and the story alike.

4 The End Of The World

Biomutant World Eater

As the story begins, players are told that the Tree of Life is being eaten by World-Eaters. Players have to go from root to root, fighting these World-Eater monsters. However, they can also decide to spare them, resulting in the end of the world.

Throughout the game, players will join forces with side characters and tribes. This will determine whether the character can defeat these monsters, or choose to spare them. Players must choose a side and decide whether they want to save or destroy the planet. These decisions materialize in the forms of allies, both tribal and individual.

3 Human Artifacts

Biomutant City Wrecks

It's clear that while humans did desert this planet, they left almost everything behind, from gym equipment to entire cities. These artifacts and wrecks can be unearthed and examined by the character, and can open a path of very interesting side quests that lead players down the path of uncovering the past of the planet.

Players can interact with various items left behind by humans, and some might even unlock some handy traits or weapons. Furthermore, finding Old World vaults can explain many theories and questions that a player might have as they blaze through Biomutant.

2 Out-Of-Date's Work

Biomutant Out-Of-Date

Out-Of-Date's character and work is a very interesting storyline. His Ark holds secrets that raise a lot of questions in players. For example, what are the weird creatures held in those tubes? Were they something humans worked on? Or are they something Out-Of-Date is crafting?

Out-Of-Date's Ark was created and maintained as a way to prepare for the end of the world. But even if the world is saved, the Ark remains with all its mysteries, so players might ask, why? Will there be some utility of this Ark, will they get some answers in hopefully upcoming games, or will they be able to use it for space travel? There must be a reason.

1 The Two Endings

Biomutant Light & Dark Aura

It's apparent throughout the game that players get to decide the fate of the protagonist as well as the entire planet the game takes place on. Because of this, even the most rookie of players can guess that there will be two different endings to the game. However, not all players find both.

The Light Ending

While this is, in fact, relative, there is a good and a bad ending to the game. The good ending is the light ending, meaning that the character's aura is light, therefore he is able to save the planet. He forgives and spares Lupa-Lupin, ending the cycle of violence that has ruled the nation ever since the two characters' mothers died. After that, players take Out-Of-Date, the Sifu, and four chosen allies onto the Ark.

The Dark Ending

The bad ending entails that the character's aura is dark by the end of the gameplay. He kills Lupa-Lupin once and for all, leaving the world to crumble as the World-Eaters destroy the Tree of Life. Players then take Out-Of-Date and the Sifu to the Ark, but don't get to take anyone else.

Both endings suggest that the protagonist gets on board the Ark, and will start a journey through the stars. But of course, this theory is not yet confirmed.
