Biomutant has had an odd journey in development, but at long last, it looks like its release is near. Experiment 101 promises that this action RPG is going to release in May of 2021, meaning there's only a few more weeks of waiting left. It'll be interesting to see how the parts of Biomutant add up. Experiment 101's very first game promises to include all kinds of interesting elements, from martial arts driven combat to a sprawling world where players can really leave their mark. It's no surprise that Biomutant has a fair few fans in its back pocket, all eager to see what Experiment 101 has to offer to the game industry.

For some fans, the remaining weeks ahead of Biomutant's release might still seem like an awfully long wait. While there aren't a ton of games out there that compare to Biomutant, there are a couple options. One of them is an interesting indie game called Overgrowth that spent a great many years in development but has been available on Steam since 2017. Wolfire Games may not be the most famous indie developer out there, but it's received quite a bit of praise for some of its games. It's not a perfect comparison to Biomutant, but Overgrowth might still be just right to tide over Biomutant fans for a few weeks.

Comparing Biomutant and Overgrowth

The most basic thing that Biomutant and Overgrowth have in common is the premise. Fans who have been following Biomutant know that the game is set in a distant future where human society is long gone and animals have mutated into sentient beings of many kinds. Overgrowth does something very similar. Instead of Biomutant's customizable mutant protagonist, Overgrowth features a rabbit protagonist whose quest leads to encounters with other anthropomorphic animals, including wolves, cats, and dogs.

Another important thing that Biomutant and Overgrowth share is a focus on martial arts. Experiment 101 has continuously stressed martial arts as crucial to Biomutant. As the player explores the game's setting, they'll come across all kinds of martial arts master and learn new techniques that they can blend into combat alongside swords and gunplay. Overgrowth also puts a heavy emphasis on martial arts, and like Biomutant, it does its best to give players options on how to use their techniques. The brute force and stealth approaches simultaneously available in Overgrowth are not unlike Biomutant's choices between fighting with guns, swords, fists, or mutant abilities.

Overgrowth's Love of Fighting

Admittedly Overgrowth has a weakness in the form of awkward platforming, but the game's fans largely agree that Wolfire Games makes up for that flaw with Overgrowth's combat. It's intentionally designed to be highly cinematic and empowering, rewarding players for being resourceful, positioning well in combat, and above all, being flashy. That sounds not unlike Biomutant's combat, which looks like it's intentionally over the top in some of the same ways. After all, Biomutant's protagonist can take over a giant robotic hand and ride it into battle. Biomutant and Overgrowth seem designed on a shared principle of a love of action that looks as exciting as it plays.

Overgrowth on Steam happens to be a great gateway into Wolfire Games' works, since it comes with a free copy of its acclaimed 2013 shooter Receiver, which goes to great lengths to simulate using a handgun in battle. Getting into Overgrowth now also gives fans an opportunity to join its community, which still holds events related to Overgrowth's action sequences and in-game map maker. Biomutant's release is just around the corner, but sometimes the closest releases feel like they're the farthest away. For any Biomutant fans who are feeling that wayOvergrowth might be what they need to scratch their itch.

Biomutant releases on May 25, 2021 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
