Ever since the first trailer for Biomutant debuted at Gamescom 2017, the quirky action RPG has been turning heads. Unfortunately for those looking forward to the game, it's been hit with one delay after another, missing its 2018 and 2019 release windows. Official Biomutant release date information is still unavailable at the time of this writing, but an online retailer may have spilled the beans.

European retailer Instant Gaming has the Biomutant release date listed for March 17, 2020. March 17 falls on a Tuesday and wouldn't be a typical placeholder date, so it's a little easier to believe than some other online release date leaks. Even so, fans shouldn't circle anything on their calendars until an official Biomutant release date is announced by publisher THQ Nordic.

Even though Biomutant is a new IP from an unproven studio, the game has generated quite a bit of hype thanks to its exciting gameplay trailers and features. The studio has compared Biomutant to the mega popular Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and so it's understandable why there are quite a few who are excited to get their hands on the game.

Another reason why Biomutant has drummed up interest is due to its extensive character customization options. Biomutant's character customization allows players to fully customize their own mutant raccoon, from their sex to the length of their body to the color of their fur. But unlike most games where character customization is just cosmetic, the way players customize their creature in Biomutant will have a direct impact on gameplay.

Player choice plays a large role in Biomutant beyond just the character creation tools. Players will be able to select upgrades for their character throughout the game, not to mention change the course of the story through their decisions. Biomutant also has a Karma system that players have to keep in mind while interacting with other characters that they find in the open world.

Whether or not all of these elements can come together to create a compelling gameplay experience remains to be seen. If the leaked Biomutant release date is accurate, then those looking forward to the first game from studio Experiment 101 won't have to wait much longer to find out.

Biomutant is in development for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
