Fans have been worried about the upcoming open-world action-adventure game Biomutant. THQ Nordic was alarmingly silent about the game throughout most of 2020, with very few announcements or reveals.

The game's website has fallen into disrepair, as several previously featured gameplay videos were set to private. This has left some fans worried that the game might have been delayed again, pending major changes that made the old videos no longer representative of the final project; or possibly even canceled entirely.

With its unique aesthetic and gameplay, fans have been excited about the game for years. Biomutant is expected to be an open-world action-adventure game set in a post-apocalyptic world inhabited by anthropomorphic mutant animals. In it, the player takes on the role of a customizable raccoon-like creature who is tasked with defeating several huge monsters that have begun to feast on the roots of the world tree. The game will have extensive character creation options, and the player will also be able to change their character during gameplay through various mutations, bionics, and weapons.

THQ Nordic originally announced Biomutant at Gamescom in 2017 for a 2018 release. That date didn't pan out, and the game missed both its planned 2018 and 2019 release dates. Despite some rumors, the game failed to release in 2020 as well.

While fans may be worried, there is still cause for hope. An interim financial report by THQ Nordic parent company Embracer Group does still list Biomutant under the "Announced releases in the Games business area as of November 18, 2020" section. So it's unlikely the game has been canceled, otherwise, it probably wouldn't be listed.

Before that, the last reliable announcement was a financial report by Embracer that claimed that the game should be released by the end of its current fiscal year. THQ Nordic's fiscal year ends on March 31, 2021, so if that report is accurate, Biomutant will be released by that date at the latest.

This is excellent news for fans, who have been looking forward to this game for over three years now. Nearly anything that shows that the game hasn't been canceled outright is good news, and with Covid-19 hitting early in 2020, it's understandable that the game may have fallen a little behind.

Of course, this isn't the first time there have been hints at a new release date only to have it fall through. A rumor based on a European retailer listing suggested that Biomutant would release on March 17, 2020, but that turned out to be false as well. It's possible that these latest two financial reports are incorrect and the game won't release before March 31, 2021. Until a date is finally announced by THQ Nordic it will be impossible to know for sure.

Biomutant is in development for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
