101 Games’ long awaited project, Biomutant, has finally released. Sadly, the overall opinion of the game doesn't seem to be great. It’s safe to say at this point that Biomutant had a lot of neat ideas, and managed to implement a few of them incredibly well, but is downright mediocre or bad in some other respects.

That said, it's hard to overstat just how many different concepts this title tried to implement. So many, in fact, that quite a few of them get buried or go undiscovered. To help new players enjoy Biomutant as much as possible, here are some lesser-known mechanics that they likely didn't even know they were ignoring.

10 Super Wung-Fu Is Easier Than It Seems

Biomutant - A Fully-Charged Super Wung Fu Meter

After the unbearably long tutorial section of Biomutant, players can finally start exploring this undeniably beautiful world full of strange, mutated creatures. Once they go out and level up a few times, they’ll quickly discover both the Special Attack and Super Wung Fu systems.

The game is very clear in how to use this mechanic. Players have to use three separate Special Attacks to fill the meter and trigger this special state. In actuality, though, players only need to use two while focusing on alternating between them. Use one, use a different one, then use the first one again, and Super Wung Fu will be all charged up.

9 Fast Travel Fast Forwards Time As Well

Biomutant - Using A Bonfire To Progress Time

Again, there is a lot in Biomutant that is unexplained. The English narrator, David Parker, does a great job painting a picture on the convoluted lore of this world or how the player character has this “grand destiny”. However, he rarely explains any actual gameplay mechanics, leaving it to the tutorial pop-ups instead. For smaller features though, these pop-ups are either nonexistent or way too late.

For example, most players don’t know that Fast Travel actually progresses time at a faster rate. The bonfires spread across the world might seem more convenient, but these aren't marked on the map, so it's easy to forget where they are. The Fast Travel trick, in contrast, is a lot more dependable. Essentially, the farther one fast travels on the map, the more time progresses.

8 "Randomize" Has A Secondary Function

Biomutant - Showing The Character Creation And The Randomize Feature

This one is probably not an intended feature, and more of an exploit that serves a purpose. During the initial character creation, if players “Randomize” during the "Mutate Character" section of the creator, their "base" version of the Ronin is modified.

For example, say a player hits “Randomize” and the slider starts fully on the agility side of the distribution. Their final appearance, no matter where it ends up on this circular selector, will likely have some of the agility visual traits such as a slender face or legs. It doesn't change much, but it does help players not despise how their character looks until they stumble upon a Mutation Pool.

7 Re-Mutating The Ronin

Biomutant - About To Interact With A Mutation Pool

One of the best pieces of advice for players early on in Biomutant is to max out their Biohazard resistance. There are all the usual biomes in Biomutant, such as a frigid area, a volcano area, and so on. The irradiated areas pop up a tad more frequently, and the enemies that appear here drop highly sought-after Bio Points.

Additionally, but spread throughout each of these areas are Mutation Pools that allow players to re-adjust the appearance of their Ronin. They're always hidden underground, and always have a boss fight in the room where they're found. For those who had to make a big-headed, dorky-looking MC to play as a Psi-Freak, this should make the game more enjoyable.

6 The Gibberish Frequency Option

Biomutant - Showing Off The Gibberish Frequency Option

Many players likely found this option on their own, since so many went into the settings to turn up the almost inaudible sound effects. Under the Audio Options, there are two settings that will make a huge difference for new players in terms of quality of life.

One is the Gibberish Meter, which controls how often NPCs will make their random Sims-like animal noises while talking to the main character. It’s recommended not to turn the Gibberish setting low or off until after players have met the character “Best-By” in a flashback. Why? Simply because his Gibberish noises are straight-up hilarious.

5 Guns Can Have Active Reload

Biomutant - The Prompt That Comes Up To Perfect Reload

This next one is a Perk rather than a gameplay mechanic, but once it’s unlocked, players will wonder why it was ever missing from the default state of the game. Guns in Biomutant are strong — probably too strong, leading a lot of players to get through the game virtually untouched.

One reason for this is because of a general Ranged Combat perk that costs three Upgrade Points, called Perfect Reload. When a player is near the end of their clip, they can press an input, and their gun is instantly reloaded instead of taking 5+ seconds. Even for those players that are only focused on melee combat, Perfect Reload is a great Perk to get.

4 The Fungi Mutation Ability

Biomutant - Bouncing On A Fungi

There have been many different Youtube videos and articles centered around vertical movement in Biomutant, but almost none of them talk about the Fungi ability. This is a Mutation players can unlock with 3 simple Bio Points right away. It allows them to place mushrooms on the ground where they want in an area around their character.

These mushrooms function like springs from the Sonic the Hedgehog games, as they launch up whatever touches them. In combat this is great, as it can pop small enemies up into the air, opening them up to the destructive air combos. However, its most practical use is for vertical movement. Though many guides discuss other roundabout movement tricks, the Fungi ability shouldn't be overlooked.

3 Free Skill Points At Bandit Camps

Biomutant - Reading An Upgrade Skill Book In A Bandit Camp

There are a variety of Bandit Camps spread throughout the world of Biomutant. And, like Bandit Camps in any game, they're glorified combat arenas with a "special" enemy who functions as the leader of the camp.

Once this mob is taken out, players can then find a book on a pedestal hidden somewhere in the camp. Interacting with this book gives players a free Upgrade Point, which can otherwise only be obtained from leveling up. There are a few incrediblePerks that cost two or three of these points, so knowing about extra points can make a huge difference.

2 The Karma-Altering Critters

Biomutant - Picking A Creatures Fate For Light and Dark Points

Players might not have picked up on it, but the tutorial flashback with Best-By in the tutorial section of the game actually served another purpose. It taught players how to use the net, but many didn't realize it was teaching them how to catch small critters out in the wild.

Spread out among the various biomes of the map are random creatures the Ronin can capture. Most players likely took these creatures as nothing more than set dressing, implemented to make the world look more alive. But, if they're caught, the player has two (technically three) options: kill or keep the animal. Either option leads to the Ronin getting a Karma point in either Light or Dark. These little things are the best way to grind out Karma and unlock incredible abilities, like Levitate or Sky Spark.

1 Persuading NPCs for extra info

Biomutant - Example Of Persuading An NPC

Lastly is the Charisma stat in Biomutant. The in-game explanation of this stat is that it unlocks additional dialogue info, and that’s true. What the game doesn’t tell players is that these secret locations they can persuade out of NPCs can be found naturally.

Additionally, some NPCs are obviously meant to be persuaded with for extra info. However, players often don't figure out that they can persuade most side-quest NPCs to give extra info related to their quest as well.
