Last night Gears of War 3 producer Rod Fegusson took to Twitter to announce that today, February 23rd, will see a big Gears 3 related announcement. Beyond a simple, “Big Gears announcement tomorrow,” the tweet contained no hints as to what was in store for gamers.
While speculation could go all day long, well past when the announcement is made, as to what Epic Games has in store for gamers, anything Gears related is sure to be something to get excited over. Still, there are a few possibilities, based on things Epic has said and hasn’t revealed that could hint at the announcement.
After having cancelled their big Spike VGA announcement, many figured that Epic Games was holding off until a couple days later to unveil whatever it was they had brewing. Unfortunately, 2010 came and went without this announcement, and many gamers forgot its potential ever existed. Considering earlier hints suggested the Spike unveiling was more centered on the Gears series rather than the specific title of Gears 3, this may not be the same news or announcement they were planning back then.
One real possibility for this announcement could be the unveiling of more Gears 3 multiplayer beta plans. With the release of Bulletstorm, many gamers netted themselves access to the beta, when it does start, but Epic did say that Bulletstorm would not be the only way for players to access the beta. And that’s not really a “big” announcement, is it?
Delaying Gears 3 into fall of 2011 certainly disappointed a lot of gamers, but getting their hands on the game, in one form or another, will help ease the pain. Just watching new videos of the game in action is enough to keep focused on the title.
Epic has a big two weeks ahead of them, not only with this Gears 3 announcement today that is sure to create some buzz, but also with their unveiling of the next generation of the Unreal Engine at GDC. Promising an experience similar to what was had when the first Unreal Engine was unveiled, this tech demo is going to be nothing short of breathtaking.
