Prior to making the award-winning open-world RPG, Fallout 3, Bethesda Softworks had an idea that they pitched for an RPG based on the Star Trek Universe. Their idea was to create a game in the style of Bethesda's traditional single-player RPG set in the Captain Kirk era of the Star Trek mythos.

Bethesda did own the Star Trek video game rights after it expired from Activision's grasp. As we know, Bethesda went on the make the disappointing Star Trek Legacy which also had much potential but fell flat with some bugs, control issues and graphics problems.

"Nothing was developed internally... There was a pitch to do a big Star Trek RPG. [But] we were doing other things, we made Fallout. We can't do everything."

"I want the big Star Trek RPG that you go out and explore the universe."

I would of loved to have seen a Bethesda-style Trek RPG. I didn't love Fallout 3 as many others did and much prefer Bethesda's Elder Scrolls games. I felt Fallout 3 was too limited in gameplay variety and its open-worldness with invisible walls littering the apocalyptic cityscape. Without the V.A.T.S. system, combat would nearly be impossible in some cases due to the shooting style and weak AI and I was simply underwhelmed after Oblivion and Morrowind.

Star Trek would of allowed for something special but I'm curious as to how they would of handled the space-faring and starship elements seeing as how they shy away from vehicular gameplay in their games.

Would you have liked a classic Trek-era single player RPG or will Star Trek Online bring that world (read: universe) in a better way?
