Bethesda is certainly going to be busy over the next few months, with the releases of a huge number of games including the likes of Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus and a selection of virtual reality games. On top of that, however, it turns out that the publisher also has something secret lined up for the video game world.

That’s according to Pete Hines, at least. Speaking in an interview with Tek Syndicate during PAX West, Bethesda’s Vice President of marketing and PR let slip the news that the company has an as-yet-unannounced game scheduled for release in 2017, which certainly comes as a surprise. “We have a ton of stuff going on, and we even have a game coming out this year that we haven’t even told anybody about yet,” said Hines.

When pressed for more details, Hines remained coy about the matter. “It can wait – it won’t be so long,” said the Bethesda executive. Indeed, he was even unable to confirm if the game was a new intellectual property or not. Those interested in seeing the full exchange can do so below.

Exactly what this game will be is going to no doubt be the matter of much speculation. Previously, Bethesda executive producer Todd Howard had teased the existence of three big new Bethesda projects, without going into further details about what these may be. This 2017 release could prove to be one of the smaller games that Bethesda has been working on, but nonetheless it would be impressive to see a full-scale game launch completely out of the blue.

Had Hines’ comments come a little bit earlier, then certain fans may well have started piecing together other hints about what this project could be. Internet sleuths believed they had tracked down the existence of Game of Thrones game from Bethesda, after a mysterious listing appeared on the Target website. Since then, however, Target has confirmed the Bethesda Game of Thrones project is not real.

With that mystery debunked, Bethesda fans may well have to go back to the drawing board to work out exactly what this secret game is. In the meantime, at least there’s still a long list of other Bethesda 2017 releases to get through.
