The Mass Effect: Legendary Edition might be enough to keep fans busy for a bit longer, but sooner or later, they are going to want more than a remaster and vague promises. Mass Effect 4 is likely still several years away. However, the team recently gained an important new member.

On Monday, Hilary Heskett announced over Twitter that she will be joining the team as Mass Effect 4's Narrative Producer. The former Anthropology major previously worked as the Senior Brand Manager for Bethesda Softworks before returning to EA in 2020.

Heskett worked for BioWare in the past, serving as a Community Consultant and Planner from 2011 to 2013. She also oversaw much of the marketing for Dragon Age: Inquisition, its post-launch content, Mass Effect: Andromeda, and Anthem. As Bethesda’s Senior Brand Manager, she orchestrated the media campaigns for several major titles. These include Elder Scrolls Online, Starfield, The Evil Within 2, and Ghostwire Tokyo. She also oversaw a substantial part of the company’s market research and managed things like the creation of demos and other media events. Heskett returned to BioWare in 2020 to work on brand management for the Dragon Age series.

Having even a tangential connection to Andromeda and Anthem might make some BioWare fans nervous. However, neither Heskett’s current nor previous positions imply any creative control. Narrative Producers usually manage communication between a game’s writers, animators, producers, and directors. They also play a significant role in setting development goals and timetables, as well as helping to maintain a coherent vision of the final product. That also includes editing and developing story outlines, treatments, and scripts.

It’s a crucial job in AAA game development, but not as creatively powerful as the name might imply. However, Heskett signing likely indicates that BioWare is making progress on Mass Effect 4. Whether it means full production is around the corner is hard to say, but would make sense given that Mass Effect: Legendary Edition is well into its post-release period. However, fans probably still have a long wait ahead of them. Only BioWare knows how far along the next Mass Effect is, but “not very” remains a reasonable guess.

BioWare teased the Mass Effect 4 last December. The less than two-minute teaser chronicled the history of the Mass Effect universe through a series of radio broadcasts and left a few tantalizing clues for Mass Effect fans to pick apart. The series next entry is likely still a long way off, but hiring a new Narrative Producer suggests production may soon ramp up.

Mass Effect 4 is currently in development.
