As a long-running horror series, Resident Evil is still going strong, with last year's Village proving that there is still life left in the franchise and the possibility of even more entries to follow. Starting life back in 1996, the original title is considered one of the most influential horror games of all time and has continued to be a formidable addition to the genre, even if there was a rocky period for some fans with the fifth and sixth games. However, the first game is still beloved even to this day, and one modder has been remaking the game from a different viewpoint.

As spotted by DSOGaming, user PerroAutonomo has finally released the beta version of their Resident Evil remake, which reimagines the classic survival horror game from a first-person perspective. Simply called "Biohazard," the modder's project is still a work in progress with some areas that need to be built, but players can now download this early iteration from Itch.io. The game has been made in the Unity engine, but still retains the general visual style reminiscent of the original.

PerroAutonomo released test footage from their first-person Resident Evil project last September, which shows the player roaming around the infamous Spencer mansion before taking on a wandering zombie. While the original three entries in the series popularized the third-person fixed camera perspective, the beta of "Biohazard" brings the quarter of a century old game into an era in which the modern Resident Evil games favor the first-person viewpoint. It should also be mentioned that the modder has made the beta free to download and insists this is a fan project not intended for profit.

There are many fans out there who are keen to tinker with the format of the games. One user showed what Resident Evil 4 would look like as a PS1 game, while another did the opposite and gave a visual demonstration of what an Unreal Engine remake of the fourth game could potentially look like, making it even more creepy.

As a series, Resident Evil is iconic, being one of the biggest horror franchises in the mainstream video game sphere. With Resident Evil Village DLC being teased lately, fans are clamoring for more, whether that be new official content or from fan-created projects such as PerroAutonomo's "Biohazard" beta. Here's hoping that the full game comes out soon, as this iteration is already looking pretty interesting.

Resident Evil came out in 1996 for the original PlayStation.
