While a generic story can be offputting, rich dialogue can enhance a video game as part of immersive storytelling. A game with multiple storylines can conjoin for one seamless experience. Often, it's the absence of a strong leading protagonist that makes a plot less interesting.

The PlayStation 4 is recognized for its story-driven games with compelling narratives. However, some video games had neither fun gameplay nor exciting storylines. Highly anticipated games can miss the mark due to lackluster storylines in main stories or side quests. There are PlayStation 4 games not worth the hype and others that delivered an all-around enjoyable experience.

10 Persona 5 Royal (Worked)

Persona 5 Royal

Persona 5 Royal adds another semester, graphical enhancements, and dialogue, among other improvements. It's a prime example of how to rerelease an enhanced version of a game. Expect to spend around 100 hours trying to beat this behemoth of a video game. However, you'll breeze through Persona 5 Royal because of its immersive story that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

9 Kingdom Hearts III (Not Worth The Hype)

Sora Donald Duck

The storytelling of Kingdom Hearts III could've been better, but at least the individual stories in each world were enjoyable. It's how the stories come together for the overarching plot that needs work. It winds up being too convoluted, especially for a game with kids and young adults as its target demographic.

Fans of the series expected a story as intriguing as Final Fantasy games and Disney movies, yet it fell short. Arendelle, the Frozen world, was frustratingly unpolished. The 100 Acre Wood and San Frasokyo should've been more lively and rife with storylines.

8 Until Dawn (Worked)

Until Dawn Frightened

The horror genre contains some of the best and worst games of all time. The PlayStation 4 has horror releases from both sides of the spectrum, yet it can be definitively said that Until Dawn works. The game's story starts as a cheesy horror flick, but it's more in-depth on a profound level. In-game decisions allow you to influence the events of the game. Until Dawn features prominent actors like Rami Malek, Peter Stormare, and Hayden Panettiere.

7 The Dark Pictures: Man Of Medan (Not Worth The Hype)

The first game in The Dark Pictures Anthology had big shoes to fill after Until Dawn's release. Developer Supermassive Games' 2019 interactive survival horror game is one of eight planned games in The Dark Pictures Anthology. Ultimately, The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan's story didn't live up to the considerable hype. Play the game, but don't expect it to be on par with Until Dawn.

6 The Outer Worlds (Worked)

The Outer Worlds

This outer space phenomenon proved that developer Obsidian Entertainment is still relevant. Although the graphics could've been more polished, the many storylines are charming. Whether you're beginning the game or finding out its epic conclusion, The Outer Worlds never ceases to surprise. The Stranger, the game's protagonist, has a customizable appearance. Providing the freedom to choose your path, The Outer Worlds is a refreshing experience that can't be missed.

5 Mass Effect: Andromeda (Not Worth The Hype)

As one of the most anticipated RPG in years, ultimately, Mass Effect: Andromeda's storylines were not worth the hype. The voice acting felt rushed as characters had mismatched voices. A host of problems keep Mass Effect: Andromeda from reaching it's potential, yet it was the storytelling that stood out negatively.

Without a strong leading protagonist like Commander Shepard from the original trilogy, Mass Effect: Andromeda failed to find its footing. None of the characters stand out, which is what we expect in a breakout RPG.

4 Final Fantasy VII Remake (Worked)

Cloud And Sephiroth in Final Fantasy VII Remake

The beginning and the ending of Final Fantasy VII Remake are intriguing in the utmost way. The game struggles at points in the middle, but overall, the storylines keep it together. You are handsomely rewarded for completing side quests, which add so much to the game.

The main storyline in a dystopian world where a mega-corporation influences societal norms is something few could criticize. Cloud is a strong leading protagonist who says he's in it for the money, but he's more heroic than he puts off.

3 Anthem (Not Worth The Hype)

Anthem

Anthem was a highly anticipated game that could've attained masterpiece status if it had more immersive storytelling. Flying mechanics and class options make Anthem an appealing experience; however, many are looking for a game that goes above and beyond with fascinating storylines. Yes, the game does have numerous bugs that haven't been fixed. An overhaul to gameplay could fix the glitches, yet Anthem falls short of expectations because of dull storylines.

2 The Last Of Us Part II (Worked)

The amount of polish in The Last of Us Part II is more than anticipated. Even if the writers made some peculiar choices, it's hard to pick apart this lengthy game. The gameplay had some parts where it felt repetitive, but the story remained consistent throughout. The Last of Us Part II will be remembered as one of the PlayStation 4's best games because of its gripping main storyline from start to finish.

1 Assassin's Creed Unity (Not Worth The Hype)

While the game could be praised for its costume skins and equipment, where Assassin's Creed Unity falters is with its story. There are various side quests and missions, but the game stabs itself in the back by not having a strong leading character.

Putting the game's numerous glitches and bugs aside, this is the best way to play Assassin's Creed in co-op online. However, the storylines are not as intriguing as other games in the series. Bring online co-op back to the series, but make the story along the lines of Assassin's Creed II, which included historical figures like Leonardo da Vinci.
