While there might be a lot more games that feature the second World War, there are still a few that feature the Great War. These games can range from first-person shooters that put players in the trenches to games that show the naval battles that occurred during the war. Players will feel truly immersed as they rush from trench to trench to get the upper hand on their enemies.

Some World War I games go into alternate history, while others take on a horror setting. Either way, it is nice to see the Great War get some love.

10 Battlefield 1

A plane as it tries to shoot down a Zeppelin

Battlefield 1 brings players a singleplayer and multiplayer experience during World War I. A few historical characters also appear in the singleplayer, such as Lawrence of Arabia. The singleplayer also focuses on the air battles, the Gallipoli campaign, and the battles in France.

The multiplayer also takes players to the different theaters of war. This mode allows players to use the different vehicles of the time, such as the Zeppelins, the early tanks, and the fighter planes. Battlefield 1 will also take players out of the trenches and into the action.

9 Verdun

French forces defending their trench from Germans

Verdun was released in 2015 for the PC originally before making it to consoles. The game focuses on the western front of World War I. Players take turns defending and attacking trenches as the match progresses, with the team who took the most ground winning.

As the game was updated, more teams besides the French and German were added. Players could play as British, Polish, Americans, and as Scottish soldiers. Defending and attacking trenches is what makes the game fun, as the player never knows where an enemy may be hiding.

8 NecroVisioN

A player attacking enemies in the game

NecroVisioN is one of the more unique games on this list, as it is a horror game. The player will find themselves fighting demons, zombies, and vampires as they play the game. The game is mainly set during the Battle of the Somme, but an infection goes around that turns soldiers into zombie-like creatures.

Besides the battlefield, players also travel to the realm of vampires and to Hell itself. There are also three endings depending on what difficulty the player chooses. If they choose the hardest difficulty, the protagonist will become the King of Hell and lead an attack on humans.

7 Jutland

A ship out on the sea

Jutland is named after the same sea battle of World War I. It was created in 2006 and lets players take part in naval battles. It simulates both individual ship and fleet combat.

Players can choose to play as either the Royal Navy or the Imperial German Navy. Players can also choose to fight in individual naval battles -- either historical or hypothetical -- or they can choose to fight in full campaigns.

6 Codename Eagle

A player being stopped by a guard

Codename Eagle was first released in the UK in 1999 and then in the US in 2000. It is set in an alternative timeline, starting in 1917. World War I and the October Revolution both did not happen, but a Russian general tries to assassinate the Czar. He succeeds, but two of the Czar's children survive.

Prince Alexander becomes Agent Red, getting revenge on the man who killed his family. While it might be set during the real Great War, it is cool to see an alternative reality where it never happened, probably meaning World War II also never happened.

5 WWI: Source

British soldiers in WWI Source

WWI: Source is a mod for Half-Life 2 that lets players take control of a Allied or Central Powers soldier. Players are able to fight through trenches, not being restricted to a time limit. Players are able to cross whenever they want, trying to take the trench for their side.

There are also maps that allow the player to fight inside of cities. There are a few maps based on famous battles of the war, such as the Marne, Somme, and Passchendaele.

4 Valiant Hearts: The Great War

Valiant Hearts: The Great War is more of the more unique games set during World War I. Its art style sticks out and so do the stories that the game follows. Players will play as a Belgian nurse, a German living in France who is drafted into the German army, and the German's father-in-law who is drafted into the French army.

Also the game does not feature a lot of killing in it, something different for a game set during a war. Instead, it tells the story of normal soldiers and the struggles they went through.

3 Civilization 6

Civilization 6 features a scenario that allows players to play during World War I. The mode is called 'War Machine' and is a 1-vs-1, with one player playing as the French and the other as the Germans. It does not have a singleplayer mode, meaning it must be played against another person.

This also means the mode would only be set on the Western Front. Hopefully Civilization will have a World War I mode that features the entire war.

2 Tannenberg

Russian forces defending against the Germans

Tannenberg is created by the same people that made Verdun, being released for PC in 2019 and console for 2020. This game focuses on the Eastern Front, allowing players to play as the Russians. There is also a singleplayer mode, meaning players could go through a campaign.

Added in April, a feature was added called the 'Wolf Truce'. The Russians and Germans will team up during this event to kill off wolves that attack the players. This is based on reports during World War I that both sides would call a truce to fight wolves.

1 Beyond The Wire

A player defending themselves from a melee attack

Beyond the Wire was released in October of 2020 and features the Western Front of World War I. It features 100 real players, all battling each other for control of the battlefield. Maps can feature both open spaces as well as the trenches the Great War was known for. While in the trenches, players can also experience the close-quarter combat by fighting their enemies with melee weapons.
