Tired of the current Mage robe offerings in World of Warcraft? Maybe it's time to play with the transmog system. Blizzard's pumped out numerous armor sets over the years. As such, there's plenty from old profession patterns to recent expansion sets. With such a wide variety of colors and styles, transmog offers players a highly in-depth level of customization.

For Mages, there are transmog sets for any situation. There are those tailored for specific specs and others that are just amazing to look at, regardless of spells used. Take a moment to consider some of the best sets from the past when creating a new look and personality for Mages.

Updated February 3, 2024 by Paul Woodward: Since Mages have been in World of Warcraft since the beginning, they have a truly impressive collection of armor that they can use for transmog. From raid sets to PvP sets, there is no shortage of armor for players to transmog so that they can look their best when they go raiding with their fellow guild members. Even if players simply just mix and match, there are so many options to choose from to the point that no two players will look the same ever again.

14 The Prestige Transmog Set

The Perfect Smoke And Mirrors Magician Transmog

Duskhaven Transmog WOW

Anyone that wants to actually look like an early 20th-century magician has to try out this Mage transmog set. From the costume with the top hat to the wand and a bag of tricks, this combination of pieces is absolutely hilarious. It definitely suits a human or gnome best (but the Horde can certainly pull it off as well). The centerpieces of the magic Mage transmog set are the Duskhaven Top Hat, Jacket, and boots, all three of which are Islands Expedition drops (BFA). See below for a complete list of the items that make this look so ridiculous:

  • Head: Duskhaven Top Hat

  • Hands: Satin Gloves of Injustice (Hellfire Citadel, dropped by Tyrant Velhari)

13 Ferocious Gladiator's Silk

Great PVP Transmog For Mages

Ferocious Gladiator's Silk

The Ferocious Gladiator's Silk armor was a PVP reward way back in season four of Legion. Anyone that has these pieces sitting around can create an awesome build with them. This blue set looks great with a basic Blue Linen Vest, but any blue-colored chest piece will look good. Dread Aspirant's Staff is another PVP reward that looks like it was designed to match the Ferocious Gladiator's Silk armor. Complete the set with pieces that match the dark/light blue aesthetic. Below are some suggestions to finish the Mage transmog set:

12 Shadowmoon/Frostwind Transmog Hybrid

A Combination of Gear That Looks Great on a Mage

Frostwind Mage Wow

The Shadowmoon/Frostwind set is perfect for those that like a blue and purple contrast. Both the Shadowmoon Cowl and Shadowmoon Robes are level 2 Armory pickups from Garrisons. The Frostwind Mantle, Gloves, and Cord are Island Expedition drops (BFA). Blue Frostwind Feathers look incredible with the purple feathery Shadowmoon Robes. Likewise, Sadana's Grisly Visage is a purple skull weapon with blue eyes, which ties the look together perfectly.

  • Head: Shadowmoon Cowl
  • Chest: Shadowmoon Robes
  • Shoulder: Frostwind Mantle
  • Hands: Frostwind Gloves
  • Waist: Frostwind Cord
  • Feet: Sandals of the Blackest Night (Terrace of Endless Spring, dropped by Tsulong)

11 Malevolent Gladiator's Silk

Would Look Great On a Fire Mage

Orc Mage Transmog Wow

This Gladiator's Silk transmog should be easy to pick up. The head and shoulder pieces can be tailored and are likely in the auction house on most servers. Gladiator's Slippers are a PVP reward through Kylo Kelwin in the Underbelly. Players can choose to go with any chest piece, but red or orange fit the look best. See below for some good options to complete the class.

10 Arcanoshatter Mage Transmog

A Unique Look For Arcane Mages

Arcanoshatter elf mage

The Arcanoshatter set looks particularly good on night elves and blood elves because of how big the pieces are. The Arcanoshatter Hood and Mantle in particular take up a lot of space on the character model. Both of the pieces are Blackrock Foundry drops, with the hood dropping from Kromog and the Mantle dropping from Operator Thogar. For the rest of the transmog set, players should consider the combination of black and burnt orange gear to match the Arcanoshatter aesthetic. This outfit will make a great transmog set for Arcane Mages.

  • Head: Arcanoshatter Hood
  • Chest: Doomslayer's Robe (Uldaman Quest, Solution to Doom)
  • Shoulder: Arcanoshatter Mantle
  • Hands: Ebony Flame Gloves (Blackwing Lair, dropped by Ebonroc)
  • Waist: Deckhand's Rope Belt (Blackrock Foundry, dropped by Iron Maidens)

9 Conqueror's Kirin Tor Garb

A Good Set For Any Mage

world-of-warcraft-mage-transmog-update4
  • Set is from Ulduar raid in Wrath of the Lich King
  • Requires Wayward Vanquisher tokens from the 25-man raid to unlock

The stunning, robeless Kirin Tor set from the Ulduar raid comes with a mysterious and intimidating look. The helm features a glowing, arcane eye that hovers just in front of it. Another glowing light feature beams from the domes of the shoulder pieces as if containing powerful energies.

The Kirin Tor Garb comes in Valorous and Conqueror's editions. The Valorous set has a red hue while the Conqueror's comes in a violet shade. Obtaining the Conqueror's version requires gaining all the set pieces through Wayward Vanquisher tokens from the 25-man difficulty of Ulduar.

8 Darkshore Warfront Cloth

A Set That Changes Depending On Faction

world-of-warcraft-mage-transmog-update5
  • Acquired in the Darkshore Warfront from Battle for Azeroth
  • Horde and Alliance receive different versions

The Battle for Azeroth expansion brought with it the all-new Warfronts. Although they came with problems, the sets they offer are fantastic. The cloth versions of the Darkshore sets for both Horde and Alliance are unique looks individualized for both factions.

The Alliance cloth set is reminiscent of a Night Elf priest. It comes adorned with feathers and other Kal'dorei trinkets. The female variant includes a translucent, lace-like chest piece unseen on other armors in World of Warcraft. The Horde gets a set inspired by the Plaguebringers of the Forsaken. It comes with 3D jeweled wristbands and a pointy cultist hat. The higher-end version comes with a haunting plague doctor mask, vials of glowing plague, and pointy objects galore.

7 Valorous Frostfire Garb

A Bright And Beautiful Set For Mages

world-of-warcraft-mage-transmog-update3

Few Mage sets are as iconic as the Frostfire Garb from Naxxramas. The 25-man Valorous variant comes with a slight change to its features. It's a violet cloth set with large, glowing, purple crystals on the shoulder pads dripping in icicles, making a perfect look for Arcane and Frost Mages alike. If players prefer the original version from vanilla WoW, it can be obtained by unlocking the secrets of Naxxramas, but it will be expensive.

The Valorous Frostfire Garb combines seamlessly with the violet variant of the Ebonchill staff from Legion. For a more sinister look, combine it with the Staff of Infinite Mysteries from Karazhan. There's enough purple here to make Prince proud.

6 Tempest Regalia

Several Versions to Choose From

world-of-warcraft-mage-transmog-update6
  • Armor pieces are from The Burning Crusade's Battle for Mount Hyjal OR Legion's Tomb of Sargeras
  • Staff of Infinite Mysteries is from Karazhan

Mages who prefer to explode with vibrant, magical energies might appreciate what the electrifying Tempest Regalia has to offer. A fan favorite from The Burning Crusade, when the shoulder and helm are paired together, the set appears to create a Nikola Tesla-like beacon of ley energy, glowing and crackling with magic. Purchase each piece of the regalia from the vendor in the Battle for Mount Hyjal instance.

If the set feels a bit too dated, try for the updated version from the Tomb of Sargeras. It adds even more lightning as well as 3D features on the gloves, chest, and belt. Those who want to make an even bigger impression need the Mythic version which comes in a bright, golden hue and even more glowing features.

5 Cataclysmic Gladiator's Silk Armor

A Set With Subtle Hints to All Mage Specs

wow-best-transmog-sets-mage-update1
  • Purchased with Marks of Honor in Stormwind/Orgrimmar

There was a time when PvP gear had its own unique look rather than being a recolor of raid gear. Cataclysm was one such expansion where PvP gear looked different from the PvE gear. This set can be acquired by purchasing the ensemble for 12 Marks of Honor in either Stormwind or Orgrimmar.

This set is especially great because its design is very spec neutral at a glance. But if players look closely, they can see subtle hints to all three specs. The glowing gems on the shoulder have a firey effect on them, the gems on the robe are similar in color to the spells of a Frost Mage, and the purple colors are reminiscent of the Arcane spec. So in a way, this set would look great with any Mage, regardless of their spec.

4 Sanctified Bloodmage's Regalia

A Vampiric Themed Set For Mages

world-of-warcraft-mage-transmog-update7
  • Armor pieces are from 25-man Icecrown Citadel
  • Must purchase non-sanctified pieces first, then use tokens from the heroic version of the raid to exchange them

Ready to join the Venthyr Covenant of Shadowlands but don't know what to wear to the party? The Bloodmage's Regalia is the perfect vampiric robe. Specifically, it's the Sanctified (aka heroic) 25-man version that makes a lasting impression on Vampire-kind. The red and black robes as well as the royal cowl with sharp teeth come straight from the San'layn, a vampiric subspecies of elves.

Obtaining the set requires the initial purchase of the non-sanctified pieces from the Mage vendor in the Icecrown Citadel. Loot armor tokens from 25-man bosses within the raid and exchange them and a non-sanctified piece to get the red and black variant. Show your character's fangs and prove their worth to the Venthyr at the next grand ball.

3 Firelord's Vestments

The Most Iconic Set For Fire Mages

world-of-warcraft-mage-transmog-update2
  • Armor pieces are from Blackwing Descemt
  • Funeral Pyre Staff is from the Firelands

No truer Fire Mage set exists than the heroic variant of the Firelord's Vestments. Don the flaming skull of the Firelord and burn through foes, leaving nothing but ash and cinders. This magnificent flame robe comes with smoking lava rock for shoulder pads and robe pieces adorned with fiery runes.

Obtain the red and gold heroic variants of the Firelord's set from heroic Blackwing Descent. Combine this set with the red heroic variant of the Funeral Pyre staff from Firelands for the ultimate Fire Mage transmog set in WoW. Make all bear witness to the power of flame.

2 Netherwind Regalia

A Classic Set That Will Look Great On Arcane Mages

world-of-warcraft-mage-transmog-update1
  • Netherwind Pants are from Molten Core
  • Netherwind Helm is from Onyxia's Lair
  • All other armor pieces are from Blackwing Lair

In vanilla, the Netherwind Regalia was the crown jewel of Mage sets. The set may appear dated now, but for those nostalgic few, nothing beats the vibrant blue and violet color combination of these robes. The shoulder pads also emit an eerie glow that resonates with any Arcane Mage.

Collecting this set takes a bit of effort as the pieces drop from three different raids. The leg piece drops from Ragnaros in Molten Core, the helm drops from Onyxia in Onyxia's lair, and everything else drops from bosses in Blackwing Lair.

1 Merciless Gladiator's Silk Armor

Stylish Set For Any Mage

world-of-warcraft-mage-transmog-update8
  • Purchased with Marks of Honor in Area 52, Netherstorm

While there are many amazing sets that mages can use for transmog, the problem is that some lend themselves better to certain specs than others. For example, the Firelord's Vestments look great for a Fire Mage, but they would seem a little off for an Arcane or Frost Mage. That is where this beautiful recolor of the Tirisfal Regalia comes in. This is the Merciless Gladiator's Silk Armor set that is from the second Arena Season all the way back in The Burning Crusade.

The blue and gold of this armor combined with the slight metallic sheen result in a set that is not themed on any particular Mage spec, which is a sharp contrast from the Cataclysmic Gladiator's Silk Armor set mentioned earlier. If players need to switch between Frost or Arcane, this outfit will still look great. Combine it with the Permafrost Cape (drops off of Al'akir in Throne of Four Winds) and the Dragonwrath, Tarecgosa's Rest staff for best results.
