As the trend of cord-cutting continues, a wireless gaming headset has become an integral piece of gear in many PC rigs. The ability to move around a room not tethered to a wire is a definitive advantage. The best wireless gaming headset allows a listener to stay connected to multiple sources without the need for an expensive DAC or audio mixer. With consoles like the Xbox Series X and PS5 each having their own wireless protocols, it's a challenge to find one headset that a gamer can enjoy no matter what system they play on.

RELATED: The Best Budget Gaming Headsets in 2023

Today's wireless gaming headsets attempt to solve connectivity issues using proprietary USB RF adapters and Bluetooth, resorting to analog audio cables only when necessary. Even if a gamer is only interested in a headset to use with a PC or particular console, there is a device that can provide them with stellar sound quality.

When shopping for a wireless gaming headset, consider these factors:

  • Platform: Since different gaming platforms support a variety of wireless connection methods, knowing which headset will work with a particular console is critical. Nearly all wireless gaming headsets will pair with a PC through RF or Bluetooth, but the situation is more complicated for PlayStation and Xbox gamers.
  • Build quality: Already more costly than their wired counterparts, some wireless headsets try to offset the added cost with questionable build quality. Fortunately, there are affordable candidates utilizing steel and durable components that can serve a gamer well for years.
  • Surround sound: Just like with VR headsets, gamers seek more immersive ways to experience in-game audio. Some headsets offer spatial audio formats like Dolby Atmos that can make listeners feel like they are part of the action, with sounds entering eardrums at every angle.
  • Battery life: Having to repeatedly recharge a device is one of the main reasons why buyers still opt for wired alternatives. Fortunately, certain wireless gaming headsets now come with generous battery life that makes going cord-free more tempting than ever before.

Cons
  • Ineffective noise cancellation

When spending a significant amount of money on a high-end wireless gaming headset, expectations are naturally high. The A30 is one of the first Logitech G branded devices since the company acquired Astro Gaming in 2017. Aiming to appeal to as many gamers as possible, this wireless gaming headset is available in 2 versions compatible with Xbox or PlayStation consoles, with both varieties great choices for PC users. Thanks to an available Bluetooth connection, the Logitech G Astro A30 can also connect to the Nintendo Switch and mobile devices.

If there is one advantage the Astro A30 has over lesser expensive headsets is its ability to mix audio from several different sources at once. While gaming on a PS5 or Xbox Series X using the Logitech Lightspeed wireless dongle, listeners can monitor audio from other sources using Bluetooth or an analog audio connection. The Logitech G mobile app is used for fine-tuning audio settings and profiles, but the A30 accomplishes this audio mixing without an external DAC.

Unlike previous iterations of Microsoft’s Xbox gaming headset, this device allows for plenty of customization. Of particular note is the fact that mic monitoring is now easy to handle through both the Xbox and PC. This is important because the mic on this headset is very powerful, yet is able to cancel out most background noise using voice isolation. Also, the mic has an auto-mute feature that silences the mic when players aren’t talking to cut down on breathing noises.

The headset has a minimalist design, with a simple padded headband, comfortable ear cups, and a dial that allows for intuitive volume control. A manual mute button sits at the back of the mic, which can be flipped up and out of the way during single-player game sessions.

Although it’s fairly basic, this headset is tailor-made for Xbox gaming, so it’s tough to beat as the best wireless gaming headset for Xbox consoles.

This super stylish headset is sleek, smooth, and supremely comfortable thanks to Sony’s high-quality design. The internal specs are just as well-thought-out, including the dual hidden mics.

The real highlight of this gaming headset is the 3D sound immersion, which gives the headset its name. Sony's Tempest 3D AudioTech was created specifically for maximizing sound quality from the PS5. Players become instantly aware of approaching footsteps and can avoid untimely deaths. The directional sounds work incredibly well and can easily be adjusted through console menus.

However, the addition of the active noise-cancelling button on the side is what makes this gaming headset stand out. • Default audio settings may not please everyone

Razer recently launched its 2023 refresh of the incredibly popular BlackShark V2 gaming headset. While most of the revisions aren't newsworthy, there are some significant reasons to consider upgrading. The BlackShark V2 Pro still sounds great, but it's the microphone that has experienced the most obvious improvement. Now super wideband, the Hyperclear mic can monitor wider frequencies to the point where a standalone mic doesn't seem as necessary.

As far as appearances, the BlackShark V2 Pro doesn't take many risks, lacking the RGB lighting effects that many other Razer headsets have. While the device is more about dominating competition than flashiness, flowknit memory cushions are both pillowy and breathable, connected to a steel headband and slider that adjust to nearly every size head. Compared to other headsets, the BlackShark V2 Pro forms a tighter seal on the ears for more effective passive noise isolation.

Out of the box, the BlackShark V2 Pro may sound a bit underwhelming, tuned more for FPS games than an all-around listening experience with music and movies in the mix. Still, sound levels are easily tuned in Synapse and the BlackShark V2 Pro's overall combination of comfort, battery life, and class-leading microphone makes it Razer's best wireless gaming headset to date.

How to Choose the Best Wireless Gaming Headset

turtle beach stealth pro with detachable boom mic

Once viewed as second-rate pieces of gaming gear, wireless headsets are now common additions to gaming rigs everywhere. The headsets discussed in this guide work with most if not all gaming platforms, have stellar build quality, and offer support for various spatial audio formats. Also, battery life concerns that plagued wireless headsets in the past are no longer such limiting factors.

As seen in the above headsets, there are often versions of the same device that work with PCs and every console. Selected as Game Rant's best overall wireless gaming headset, the Turtle Beach Stealth Pro ships with vast compatibility for the PC, Xbox, Playstation, and Nintendo Switch. With dual RF and Bluetooth connectivity, gamers can even monitor mobile phone calls while gaming cord-free.

Wireless gaming headsets can endure grueling gaming sessions just as well as wired headsets. There is no better example of this than the recently released Logitech G PRO X 2 which manages to reduce its weight compared to its predecessor. Even so, the headset is made with steel and aluminum in all the areas that normally experience the most stress.

Finally, many wireless gaming headsets can last several days, if not a week or more without recharging. However, few can compete with the HyperX Cloud Alpha which prioritizes a battery in its build with an unbelievable 300-hour battery life. Surprisingly, this device weighs a reasonable 337 grams and also has the high comfort level that HyperX gaming headsets are known for.

Choosing the best wireless gaming headset is often time-consuming, but focusing on models that excel in areas most important to a buyer can simplify the process.

FAQ

Q: What is better, wired or wireless headsets?

Depending on the quality of the individual headset, one may be better than the other. However, most of the time, the difference between a wireless and wired headset is indistinguishable. While the answer may have been wired over wireless in the past, technology has improved in the last several years, making wireless and wired more comparable in the modern gaming scene.

Q: What's the average budget for a gaming headset?

The budget for a gaming headset can vary wildly depending on multiple factors. Make, build, brand, RGB, and compatibility all can change the price of a headset. The lower range can be anywhere from $20-$30, while high-end gaming gear headsets can cost anywhere up to $200.

Q: Can I use a gaming headset for other purposes besides gaming?

Yes, many gaming headsets can be used for other purposes besides gaming. For example, you might use a gaming headset to listen to music, watch movies, or make phone calls. Some gaming headsets even have features like noise-cancelling microphones or high-quality audio that make them suitable for use in professional settings like video conferencing.
