Horror video games tend to be scarier than movies, and that goes double for horror games in virtual reality. With the Meta Quest 2, players will feel as though they are really there in the thick of the story rather than in the safety of their living rooms. Formerly known as the Oculus Quest 2, the recent rebranding of its parent company has led to the Oculus moniker being dropped as well.

For those with the guts to play VR horror, there are plenty of options out there. Of course, VR is still in its baby stage, so players cannot expect titles comparable to survival horror giants like Silent Hill, Resident Evil, and Fatal Frame. However, the competent and well-reviewed horror games already available on the VR store shelves may surprise players. Gamers just need to make sure they know what they're getting into with these terrifying VR titles.

Updated March 2, 2024, by Ritwik Mitra: Playing horror games in VR requires some real guts, as it increases the scare factor. However, it's also possible for players to enjoy these games a lot. Horror titles can entice and captivate players if they don't rely on cheap cliches, and makes a conscious effort to keep players engaged with smart storytelling and a slow build of tension. Horror games should be held to a high standard, and VR games are no exception to this golden rule.

If that wasn't bad enough, zombies roam this land as well, forcing players to arm themselves and deal with the many threats this game throws at the player.

Players can play either with four players in co-op mode or brave the dangers of this game solo if they wish. The latter is bound to be a scarier experience, and players should try and get the strongest weapons to tackle these undead hordes with more confidence. The game's horror element is psychological, as the player takes on the role of a hallucinating painter exploring his own home. There are no monsters to shoot or places to hide. It is purely an explorative experience full of scares.

While the game is mostly cinematic, players can pick up clues and take their time to see as much as possible.

The game is short, taking up to an hour at most, and its beauty is in its atmosphere. It may be worth the journey for horror and mystery fans, but definitely not all gamers.

Sometimes, a classic zombie apocalypse is all it takes to help players live out the power fantasy of bashing in the skulls of the undead without a care in the world. However, despite its focus on bombastic action, it must be said that seeing a zombie charge at the player can be pretty unsettling.

The game's climbing mechanics are a welcome surprise that adds more depth to the gameplay, and the best part is that players can enjoy this experience in co-op if they wish. 11 Crashland

Meta Store Rating: 4.5

Crashland

Crashland can be a pretty scary game because of how its monsters and enemies are designed, but players who manage to calm down and get used to these enemies will find their nerves of steel slowly building as the title progresses. The action in this game is great, and the light RPG elements add a sense of progression.

Given that VR games can be pretty short, players will be glad to know that Crashland is decently long. Some areas are challenging, requiring players to be more careful about how they approach certain challenging encounters. The combat is satisfying and easily the best part of the experience.
