The modding community has a reputation for creative and wild pursuits that often lead to the strangest things. Examples like Shrek in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Thomas the Train Engine in, well, anything come to mind, and the best part is the wide variety of games that can be modded. From the Fallout and Elder Scrolls franchises to fighting games like Jump Force and Dragon Ball FighterZ, there's no limit to what could truly be done.
Mods that take any two franchises and combine them, however, truly push those limits. Yet, there are always mods that are better than others. With the creativity of the modding community in mind, here are the best video game crossover mods.
Grand Theft Auto's CJ in Resident Evil 2
This mod, courtesy of BeastGamingHD, replaces the playable Resident Evil 2 character Leon and Mr. X with CJ and Big Smoke from Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, respectively. Notably, this mod came out during a resurgence of the "Here We Go Again Meme" that takes CJ's beginning quotes and applies them to a different scenario, adding another layer of creativity to this mod. And given that Big Smoke betrays CJ during the events of the game, the protagonist-antagonist swap certainly makes sense as well.
Halo's Master Chief in Jump Force
While many may not be the biggest fans of Jump Force, there's no doubting that it is a highly ambitious crossover fighting game. The modding community took these ambitions, though, and ran with them, as Halo's Master Chief is only one of several characters to be modded into the game. Designed by the prolific modder OniFox, this mod replaces the City Hunter character Ryo Seaba with Master Chief and gives him iconic Halo 3 weapons such as the Magnum, Shotgun, Rocket Launcher, Brute Shot, Gravity Hammer, and Warthog.
Dino Crisis' Regina in Resident Evil 2
Dino Crisis 4 makes the list of video game sequels we're still waiting for, so those disappointed there wasn't another entry announced for the franchise at E3 2019, there's a mod for that. Thanks to modder Crazy Potato, players can use Regina as the playable character in Resident Evil 2, which appears to be a re-skin of Claire Redfield. While it may not be dinosaur-related, there is a level of horror there that can hopefully help satisfy fans of both Capcom franchises.
Insomniac's Spider-Man in GTA San Andreas
Recent Spider-Man related headlines have broken hearts. However, while his movie future is bleak, the Spider-Man games are in good hands. It should come as no surprise then that someone added the webhead to a Grand Theft Auto game. Modder PrinceY replaced CJ in San Andreas with Insomniac's take on the Webhead, and it's pretty amazing how thorough the mod is. Not only does this mod replace the playable character, but it also adds the ability to web sling, changed the HUD, added Peter Parker dialogue, introduced iconic "thwip" audio, and even allows players to do tricks mid-air.
RDR's John Marston in Grand Theft Auto 5
Rockstar may be shaping up to announce its next game, but there will always be love for its two biggest franchises, Red Dead Redemption and Grand Theft Auto. So much love, in fact, there's a mod that combines the two. Grand Theft Auto 5 is essentially mod central, so it should come as no surprise that a mod turns the playable character into John Marston. There's not much else in terms of unique qualities for the mod, but when bringing the wild west to the big city, there's not a better way to do it.
Resident Evil 2's Tofu in Dragon Ball FighterZ
Dragon Ball FighterZ is a great 2.5D fighting game that beckons back to the old days, but considering how often it is modded, it's clearly advanced. There's mod that replaces Majin Buu with Patrick Star, Yamcha with Naruto, Gogito with Deadpool, Gotenks with Crash Bandicoot, and more, but the one that takes the cake is the replacement of Jiren with Resident Evil 2's Tofu. Created by TheDrawVoid, it adds Tofu, the gag New Game+ character from RE2, but he's wearing a beret and brought his best knife. As described by TheDrawVoid, this is "Pride Trooper Tofu" as he is also wearing Jiren's basic uniform.
The Witcher 3's Ciri in Skyrim
Created by modder Rakul, this mod sees Ciri from the Witcher 3 take on the role of Dovahkiin in Skyrim. This may be a simple mod, but for fans of both franchises, this may be something special. Furthermore, the best part about this mod is that, technically, it's not really breaking canon. Since the PC in Skyrim is created by the player and Ciri has the power to travel worlds, it's just a unique take on Ciri and the Dovahkiin. It's worth mentioning that, because of her ability, many want to see Ciri in Cyberpunk 2077, though the game director is entirely against the idea. Maybe, there'll be a mod for that.
