Although Ubisoft games can be hit-and-miss in some respects, the company has still brought characters who remain memorable. Unlike most other developers, Ubisoft manages to have its main protagonists stand out, even if their particular games might not be the highest-rated.

The success of popular franchises like Assassin’s Creed, Prince of Persia, and Far Cry’s have just as much to do with the effectiveness of the characters as the gameplay. For this reason, it’s worth ranking which characters are the absolute best. These are based primarily on their characterizations and the quality they bring, although gameplay aspects have also been taken into account.

10 Rayman

Rayman

Despite headlining one of the best platformer games to be released, Rayman is an underrated character. He deserves to be recognized due to his established balance between platforming prowess and lighthearted comedy, something very few Ubisoft characters have.

His role in a generally child-centric series might mean he has fewer fans than most, but Rayman’s quality can’t be questioned. He’s a protagonist who can appeal the younger fanbase and amuse the older ones as well, making him worth a mention.

9 Hibana

Hibana

The Rainbow Six series isn’t known for bringing forward many memorable characters, but Hibana is a good exception due to the versatility she offers to players. Choosing her brings opportunities to get your tactical side going, bringing a new aspect to gameplay.

Her background as a martial artist and lethality with explosives makes her a cool character to play as. Her natural leadership ability has proven popular with gamers, as Hibana generally has the most operator usage rate out of all the characters.

8 Vaas Montenegro

The main protagonist of Far Cry 3 is Jason Brody, but we're sure you’re more familiar with Vaas Montenegro. This guy is unhinged and over-the-top crazy, and he draws the attention of gamers just as classic lunatics like the Joker might.

Vaas’ tenure on-screen can be termed as short and deadly, as he has an immediate impact that isn’t diminished by his relatively quick demise. Villains as insane and charismatic as Vaas are hard to come by, and are always memorable.

7 Aiden Pearce

All the awesome weapons you can find in Watch Dogs have Aiden Pearce in control of them. The manner with which he conducts himself, being calm and calculating, brings in an aura of mystery. The intrigue of seeing just who this guy is allows the storyline to flow in entirety.

There’s also the fact that Aiden’s appearance simply spells out cool, being the personification of what a contemporary, tech-savvy protagonist should look like. His fleshed out back story also helps in humanizing Pearce for the viewers to a certain extent.

6 Altair Ibn La Ahad

Altair

Quiet, calm, and above all else, a wise leader with many stories to tell, Altair was the protagonist who kicked off the long-running Assassin’s Creed series. He remains at the top of the best assassins, thanks largely to his silent but deadly persona.

Character models still don’t compare to Altair’s, who has the appearance of the ultimate assassin. The legacy he’s set for the series has retroactively brought more respect toward him, which appreciates how Altair brought nuances to the skill of assassination.

5 Kassandra

Kassandra

Easily more preferable for gamers to play as than Alexios, Kassandra’s disposition is such that the players themselves feel empowered. She’s got the fierce personality to cut through her enemies, yet has soft aspects to herself that make one relate to her.

Kassandra’s role as the legendary Misthios also set her up as the first chronological protagonist, ensuring her place in the legacy of Assassin’s Creed. Controlling her gameplay is smoother than most other protagonists, although she also packs a mean punch. This kind of diversity in gameplay and characterization is impossible not to appreciate in any protagonist.

4 Jade

Jade

At a time when female characters were largely exploited for visual appeal, Jade was one of the few exceptions. She’s characterized as her own person, one who fights for good and knows where to draw the line. Yet, her flaws allow her to be even more interesting.

Jade’s smart characteristics and tendency to learn from her mistakes are the kind of humane quality game protagonists need. The adventurous spirit she evokes is hard to miss and easy to get captured in, a quality that is rare to find.

3 Sam Fisher

Sam Fisher

Splinter Cell games are among the best-ever reviewed titles in Ubisoft’s history. A lot of credit goes to Sam Fiser, the long-running protagonist of this series. Sam’s winning quality is how he’s presented as an everyman in death-defying situations, allowing for players to visualize themselves in his shoes.

His sarcastic demeanor ensures there are plenty of one-liners to connect to gamers, as funny and action-heavy protagonists are always worth playing as. Of course, his complete mastery of stealth mechanics are skills you just have to marvel at.

2 The Prince Of Persia

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

There are some aspects of the games that haven’t aged well, but the Prince’s character has remained evergreen. His character development is one to behold, as he goes from a helpless young man to a tortured protagonist and eventually into a wise king.

Playing as him is an absolute treat, what with the Prince’s iconic wall-running and his mastery with platforming mechanics. His equally sardonic and remorseful personality provides a fine balance, as you just want this hero to be at peace and make things right.

1 Ezio Auditore

Ezio Auditore

Bringing everything from cool kills to behold, hilarious comedy, and a heart-wrenching decades’ worth of storylines, Ezio is the most complete protagonist Ubisoft has brought. Following his journey right from childbirth to his retirement as an assassin in his elder age is an honor, as this legendary figure experiences everything in his life.

Ezio switches in personality suited to situations, allowing him to be funny, emotional, and even a nightmare for his targets. The Assassin’s Creed series was at its peak with Ezio at the helm, with each one of his games still highly enjoyable due to Ezio’s bold presence.
