The reviews are in, and Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero has proved to be a huge success with both critics and fans alike. Many have noted its strong voice action and impressive animation quality (especially for being the first all 3D Dragon Ball movie). In addition to this, however, the movie is full of wonderfully entertaining character moments, unexpected yet nostalgic callbacks, a great sense of humor, and some of the most exhilarating action sequences ever seen in Dragon Ball, whilst also telling a unique and satisfying story.

Here are just some of the best things about the Akira Toriyama-penned, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.

8 New Forms For Piccolo and Gohan

Piccolo and gohans new forms

DBS: Super Hero is mostly a film centered around Gohan and Piccolo. Goku and Vegeta are in the movie but in a drastically reduced role. This, however, is for the best, as those two have gotten a ridiculous amount of attention over the last few years.

Making Piccolo and Gohan the focus of the story gives them a chance to shine, and shine they do, thanks to their new forms: Orange Piccolo and Beast Gohan. Both of these characters were long overdue for a power boost, and these new forms definitely deliver in spectacular fashion.

7 Gamma 1 and Gamma 2

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero – Gamma 1 and Gamma 2

One would think the android concept would've been played out in Dragon Ball by now. Surprisingly, DBS: Super proves that there is still some creative potential in the old Red Ribbon Army. Unlike other androids, Gamma 1 and 2 were both made with the intention to be heroes rather than villains.

Of course, their bosses are merely using them for their own ends, but neither android is explicitly evil. Though they're initially misguided, the code of honor they possess allows them to do the right thing when the time comes. In fact, it doesn't take very long before they realize that they're being manipulated by Magenta, leading them into joining the Z warriors just in time for Cell Max's release.

6 Piccolo and His Detective Skills

Piccolo's Red Ribbon Uniform

As if the comparisons to Piccolo and Batman weren't prevalent enough, DBS: Super Hero has Piccolo go full detective mode on the Red Ribbon Army. He covertly sneaks into their secret facility (multiple times) to gather information on them, even going so far as to dress up as one of their soldiers to gain access to Magenta and learn his plans.

In addition to being a great mechanism for unfolding the story in an organic way, it also makes for a great comedic premise, as Piccolo is clearly an alien, nor has he ever done detective work before. Hilarity ensues as the Namekian has to pretend to be the bad guy.

5 Goku vs. Vegeta... Again

While these two aren't the focus of the film, Goku and Vegeta do make an appearance on Beerus' planet during their training with Wis. Broly, Cheelai, and Lemo also make an appearance well. All of whom watch as Goku and Vegeta engage in a friendly sparring match where neither are allowed to use energy attacks nor transformations.

While the fight itself isn't their most exciting (though it is fun in a bare-bones kind of way), what makes it so great is the payoff. Make sure to stay after the credits for this movie!

4 Pan is Just the Best

Much like Gohan was at her age, Pan is under the tutelage of Piccolo at the beginning of the film. She's a gifted little 1/3rd Saiyan, not to mention she's cute as a button, especially when paired with the normally grouchy Piccolo.

Of course, the whole reason she's opposite Piccolo so much is that Gohan is too wrapped up in his studies, which forms one of the central conflicts of the film. Getting plenty of moments to shine throughout the story herself, DBS: Super Hero does a good job of avoiding the typical damsel in distress trope insofar as it relates to Pan.

3 Beerus is Thirsty

Beerus and Cheelai

If there's one thing that most fans did not expect, it would be that Beerus not only has romantic feelings but that he would have them for Cheelai of all people. This is something that comes as a pretty huge (though welcome) surprise, as this is never hinted at in Dragon Ball Super: Broly. Granted, that doesn't mean it can't make for some interesting character development, if not solid comedic value on its own.

In fact, it's rather hilarious that Beerus, the literal god of destruction, has a little crush on Cheelai. It'll be interesting to see if this dynamic is explored any further in future movies or episodes of Dragon Ball Super.

2 Bulma's Vanity

Bulma in Dragon Ball Super Super Hero

In a world with ego-maniacal super-villains, evil androids, and space-faring monarchs, it's quite incredible that Bulma is the most vain character in all of Dragon Ball. Just the way she uses the dragon balls, in general, is so hilariously childish; she uses it to enhance her physical features and virtually nothing else says it all.

In DBS: Super Hero, she gathers all seven magic dragon balls just so she could wish for a better butt and fewer wrinkles. It's a hilarious deconstruction of the character as she's often been depicted in Dragon Ball media.

1 Cell Max is a Beast

Dragon Ball Super Super Hero Cell Max Defeats Piccolo

One would think bringing Cell back would feel tired and cheap; however, Cell Max is himself a fun little meta character that helps to elevate the film's climactic battle. Cell Max offers none of the personality of the original Cell, though this could be by design, as the point of Cell Max is that he is a shameless retread of past success by a greedy businessman (Magenta).

Beyond the meta-commentary, however, this "new and improved" Cell features all-new moves and techniques, even forcing Piccolo to embrace his lesser used abilities such as growing his size (resulting in the best Kaiju fight in Dragon Ball history) and using his elastic arms. He's an absolute force of destruction, and though he lacks the original's charm, he makes up for it in ferocity.
