Cheap games are often associated with poor quality, but Steam is a place where low prices can actually get players some entertaining titles. Some of the games are super cheap too, going as far as under a dollar. Their quality is more than most expect for just about three quarters.
Games are known for being expensive, especially on consoles. However, PC gamers can spot these little gems. They may not have the best graphics or narrative, but they are entertaining nonetheless for their mechanics, puzzles, and gameplay.
Updated on September 4, 2023, by Mark Sammut: Most video game stores try to cover a wide range of price points in an attempt to cater to as many customers as possible, but Steam takes it to the next level. Valve's platform has some very expensive games that can break the bank, and these are not even the standard $60 AAA projects that hog most of Steam's top sellers ranking. To counter these costly projects, the outlet also has seamlessly thousands of 1 dollar games, many of which might not hit the spot with most players. Still, there are a couple of worthwhile titles.

The Deed

---|---|
Developer/s |
Pilgrim Adventures, GrabTheGames Studios |
Genre |
RPG |
Steam Link |
The Deed is pretty unique and twisted, with an aesthetic that looks pretty cheap and a setting that is anything but. Players control a character who is being screwed out of his will by his father, causing him to take matters into his own hand.
This leads to players staging a murder and trying to get away with it so that they can inherit their family's wealth instead. The story has several endings, offering excellent replay value for its low price.

Fans of classic platformers who want to check out a decent modern take on this concept will love what Handsome Mr. Frog has to offer. It's not a groundbreaking game by any means, but it doesn't need to be at that price.
Mountain
Release Date |
July 1, 2014 |
---|---|
Developer/s |
David OReilly |
Genre |
Sim |
Steam Link |
Released in 2014, Mountain boasts itself as a game where nothing matters. It has overwhelmingly positive reviews, and a lot of players have called this more of an "experience" than a game. It is a title that helps de-stress and self-reflect.
For those wanting something action-packed, they should look elsewhere. The few negative reviews call Mountain more of an interactive screensaver than an actual game. It's not for everyone, but it is definitely a hidden gem for just under a dollar.
A Trip To Yugoslavia: Director's Cut
Release Date |
February 22, 2017 |
---|---|
Developer/s |
Piotr Bunkowski, Hades Productions |
Genre |
Adventure |
Steam Link |
This game is unusual in its visual design, as it plays out like an old VHS tape that the player can rewind, pause, and fast-forward. The protagonist is Dimitri, an amateur photographer on the outskirts of a town in Yugoslavia during a mysterious conflict.
A Trip to Yugoslavia has QuickTime events, point-and-click sections, and RPG elements. The title is quite interesting and stemmed from a school project, so potentially interested players should go in with realistic expectations.
Pinkman

---|---|
Developer/s |
Viridino Studios |
Genre |
Adventure |
Steam Link |
This minimalist action platformer was met with widely positive reviews for its fast pace, responsive controls, and solid difficulty curve. The only potential cons are that the mechanics are nothing new and the game can be beaten in just two hours.
Pinkman has 100 levels filled with deadly traps that the player has to navigate through. There are no enemies to defeat. The game is all about reflexes. On top of that, the protagonist has fart powers that he can use to traverse through the levels.
Reveal The Deep
Release Date |
December 4, 2015 |
---|---|
Developer/s |
Lazy Monday Games |
Genre |
Adventure |
Steam Link |
Reveal the Deep takes place on the wreck of a 19th-century steamship. It's an exploration-based campaign where players figure out the story of the ship and its passengers as they navigate the various levels. While not a horror game, the deep-sea setting is a little chilling and will unnerve most players. For such a cheap option, this title has a great atmosphere, sound design, and puzzles.
The game can be beaten in an hour and a half, and the ending tends to be decisive. Nevertheless, there is a lot to love here considering the price.
ORION: Prelude
Release Date |
April 16, 2013 |
---|---|
Developer/s |
Dankie |
Genre |
FPS, Action |
Steam Link |
For the dinosaur fan, this indie sci-fi shooter is a co-op game where players take on missions and combat against dinosaur hordes. As ORION: Prelude was released back in 2013, there are not exactly a bunch of online strangers willing to play this game together. However, if the buyer has a group of friends willing to play with them, then ORION: Prelude is quite fun.
The game has been known to have a number of bugs and clunky movements, but players tend to love the title for its chaos. Its price also makes it a pretty appealing game, with players able to pick it up for around $1 on Steam.

Reviews have called the cheap game addictive, easy to understand, and fun. While the game is mindless, it is still entertaining, allowing players to get a lot out of just 99 cents.

February 24, 2017 |
---|---|
Developer/s |
kChamp Games |
Genre |
Action |
Steam Link |
CropDuster Supreme is about Buster, a man who ate Burrito Hut burritos and farts through nine areas. As silly and ridiculous as it may look, it has won the hearts of Steam players for its humor and story.
The game is short, but fun, especially for the cheap price tag. The areas the player gets to fart in include a restaurant, parking lot, gas station, airport, plane, hotel, elevator, gym, and, last but not least, a wedding.
Timberman
Release Date |
September 18, 2015 |
---|---|
Developer/s |
Digital Melody |
Genre |
Multiplayer |
Steam Link |
Addictive and cute, this game has different characters to choose from and unlockables ranging from Santa Claus to a bear. It is easy to play, but a challenge to master if players want to make it to the leaderboards. There are also a variety of environments to chop trees in.
Timberman plays like an arcade game, as players simply chop wood and avoid branches. For those who love button-mashing, this title definitely offers an outlet for rapidly hitting buttons. Unfortunately, the game is not especially active in this day and age, although it is not completely dead either.
Alpacapaca Dash

January 24, 2017 |
---|---|

Players have enjoyed the game for its unlockables, smooth controls, and of course, the cute alpacas. For 99 cents, many buyers have gotten at least two hours' worth of entertainment.
Bit Blaster XL
Release Date |
January 22, 2016 |
---|---|
Developer/s |
Adamvision Studios |
Genre |
Arcade |
Steam Link |
Bit Blaster XL is a bit of a throwback for anyone who was hanging out in arcades in the 80s. Basically, it is a retro-style space shooter. Like Timberman, this is an addictive game that can keep players busy for quite some time, making it an absolute bargain at its current price.
The mechanics are simple and the goal is to replace the player's previous best score. Players who left positive reviews noted hoping that this game gets a sequel. They have even mentioned that despite getting all the achievements, they still play this title just for the enjoyment of it. Even expensive games don't always have that kind of loyalty from their players.
Oik

Suffice it to say, this title gives a huge bang for its buck and allows players to enjoy some relaxing music that accompanies their gameplay experience. For those who ever played the game Zup!, Oik appears to take a lot of inspiration from that game. Crew Lab also released a bunch of sequels which offer more of the same.

Orbt XL

Adamvision Studios |
Genre |
Action |
Steam Link |
Orbt XL is another addictive title. This game is a great option if a player is just searching for something to pass the time while they wait for a match in a serious multiplayer game to queue up.
Like other 1 dollar Steam games, Orbt XL shares similarities with score-chasing arcade projects. The game can be a bit too easy, but it's still quite entertaining for its price.
The Streets Of Rage 1, 2, & 3
Release Date |
January 26, 2011 |
---|---|
Developer/s |
Sega |
Genre |
Beat 'Em Up |
Steam Link |
Developed and published by SEGA, Streets of Rage can be a bit of a nostalgic trip for some. It was originally released in 1991 in Arcades and for the Sega Genesis. The first three games are just under a dollar on Steam, and players who love these titles can shell out more money for the fourth game, which is quite recent in comparison.
The first three games were quite popular at their time, inspiring comics, a book, and even a movie and T.V. show. The games are beat-em-up sidescrollers. The player takes the role of ex-cop vigilante in a fictional American city. Crime has corrupted the local government, so it's up to the vigilantes to dish out their own personal brand of justice.
