Those who want to really show their friends just how clever they are should make sure they choose words that will help them win in as few guesses as possible.

10 RAISE - Almost Guarantee A Letter

Wordle Starting Word Raise

It's particularly bad to not get a single letter on the first guess in Wordle, but thankfully the word raise can make that almost never happen. When the five-letter words used in the game are analyzed, there are only one hundred and sixty-eight that do not include at least one letter in this word! With the potential to eliminate ninety-eight percent of potential answers in the first guess, it's an attractive option to start with.

9 SHARE - Use Common English Letters

Wordle Starting Word Share

Despite what Wheel Of Fortune may have taught people, the most common letters in English words are A, E, H, I, R, S, and T. This word manages to clear out five of those seven letters while positioning them in ways that quite a few other words may use. While it's great to simply eliminate options, it's also good to try and get a few correct placements in that first guess too when possible!

8 OURIE - Eliminate Vowels

Wordle Starting Word Ourie

A, E, I, O, U, and sometimes Y as many were taught in school, are the foundations that make many words. Some strategists suggest eliminating as many of them as possible with the first guess. One of the best words to do this with is ourie.

Ourie is a Scottish word that means depressing or dismal. Despite this, using it can help players be quite happy in the end. Not only does it eliminate four separate vowels, but it ends with the letter E which is one of the most commonly found letters at the end of words in English. Using it first can help reveal a lot about the word players are trying to guess!

7 BLAHS - The Andrew Taylor Method

Wordle Starting Word Blahs

Andrew Taylor is a software developer and mathematician in the United Kingdom that decided to use math and science to try to find the best possible starting choice for Wordle. In his YouTube video on the subject, he found using a programmed script that the word blahs should potentially eliminate the most potential answers. He also suggested centu and doggo as potential options, but both of them were seemingly less effective.

6 QUAIL - Get Weird With it

Wordle Starting Word Quail

It's true that not many words start with this combination of letters, but quail also includes three vowels and a very common consonant. Not only this, but if a player does come across a rare day that does actually have a word starting with Q and U, it's incredibly likely they could get it in just two guesses, which is quite impressive! It may be riskier to start with, but the rewards may be worth it.

5 AROSE - The Adam Filion Method

Wordle Starting Word Arose

Adam Filion, who is a senior data scientist for MathWorks, proposed his own method for finding highly effective word choices. Using a specially designed program, he found all the five-letter words he could that used the most popular letters in English. While Arose was the highest-scoring choice with his algorithm, earls, laser, and reals all tied as the second-best choice to use.

4 JUMBO - A Bit Less Common

Wordle Starting Word Jumbo

While trying to have as many green squares as possible on the first guess might seem like the way to go, others would argue that eliminating lesser seen options might be the better solution in case a player doesn't know the word in question. Jumbo is the perfect starting word for people who think this way.

Jumbo doesn't contain any of the most common letters in the English language but might reveal a bit more because of this. It still uses some semi-common choices which may help reveal options for words players may be less familiar with easier.

3 ROATE - The Tyler Glaiel Method

Wordle Starting Word Roate

Programmer and game designer Tyler Glaiel also took his own shot at trying to find the best starting word in Wordle by creating a bot that would try its best to guess potential solutions in the game. With this method, he found that using the financial term roate as the first guess allowed the bot to be the most successful. While most players are likely not robots, it still may be an effective first choice.

2 ZAXES - Reverse Psychology

Wordle Starting Word Zaxes

Zaxes is a rare five-letter word that happens to have two of the least common letters in the English language — Z and X. While Wordle doesn't tend to have extremely obscure words, using zaxes from the start can help players potentially eliminate the possibility of some of the stranger solutions they may not have in their vocabulary while still trying out two commonly used vowels. This is the perfect strategy to try for someone who thinks a bit differently than others.

1 PZAZZ - Play Wordle On Hard Mode

Wordle Starting Word Pzazz

What is the absolutely most difficult word to use as the first guess on Wordle? It has to arguably be pzazz. It uses three slots on one of the rarest letters used in the entire English language while only providing one vowel. Sure, it may not help players win, but sometimes taking on a difficult challenge is worth it, right?
