With Spider-Man: No Way Home now mere weeks away, there's arguably no better time to look back at the history of Marvel's web-slinging hero. Since making his first comic-book appearance all the way back in 1962, Spider-Man has since gone on to appear across numerous other mediums, including television shows, movies, and plenty of video games.

Just as there have been many different versions of Spider-Man in the comic books, so too have there been in real life. Over the years, many talented actors have lent their likenesses and voices to the wall-crawling hero, though not all of them have managed to bring quite as much energy to the role as others. These are the best Spider-Man actors, ranked.

10 Shinji Todō

Despite being the home of manga, Japan and its people have always had a soft spot for some of the great western superhero comics. This passion for powers once led to an officially licensed 41 episode live-action Japanese Spider-Man series in the late seventies, as well as a short and incredibly bizarre movie that was released in theaters throughout the country.

The man chosen to play Spider-Man was Shinji Todō, who'd later go on to appear in numerous mech-based kids tv shows after hanging up his Spidey suit. In the movie, which clocks in at just 24 minutes, Todō's Spider-Man squares off against an anthropomorphic swordfish, eventually using a giant mech suit to disintegrate it with the swing of his giant sword.

9 Nicholas Hammond

Prior to the 21st century, superhero movies were typically seen as a bit of a joke. Very little money was spent on their production and a lot of emphasis was placed on camp slapstick comedy rather than the high-octane action sequences that audiences have come to expect today. Sadly, Spider-Man was no different in this regard.

Though there's nothing inherently wrong with Nicholas Hammond's Spider-Man, it's difficult to compare him to some of the more recent iterations due to the drastic differences in tone. The movies and short-lived series that he starred in are still well worth watching, however, if only to see how far the character has come, not to mention superhero adaptations in general.

8 Chris Pine

Chris Pine's Spider-Man only appears briefly in Into the Spider-Verse, yet still manages to condense many of the character's best moments into one delicious bite-sized chunk. For his part, Pine brings this all together incredibly well, delivering an authoritative performance that perfectly epitomizes the concept of "short but sweet."

Whether or not the actor could have maintained such an excellent performance over a longer duration is a matter for debate, though if his portrayal of Captain Kirk in the Star Trek movies is anything to go by, only a fool would bet against him. Sadly, however, he won't be returning for the movie's sequel for somewhat obvious reasons.

7 Andrew Garfield

spider-man-actors-ranked-andrew-garfield

Andrew Garfield is perhaps a little unlucky, as his stint as Spider-Man came at a rather unfortunate time. Audiences were a little wary of another reboot so soon after Sam Raimi's well-received trilogy, while he also took up the role just a few years too soon for Spidey's MCU debut. That said, some felt that Garfield was never really a good fit for the character anyway.

Peter Parker is supposed to be a nerdy and socially awkward teenager, which ended up proving to be a big ask for the classically-trained actor. His extroverted nature and on-screen gravitas at times made Parker feel more like Iron Man than Spider-Man and, to many, was a big part of why The Amazing Spider-Man movies never quite hit the mark.

6 Nicolas Cage

Nicolas Cage's Spider-Man Noir might just be the coolest character to have come out of Into the Spider-Verse and is one that deserves to be explored in much more depth on-screen somewhere further down the line. How exactly Cage would fit this into his busy schedule remains to be seen, though, if anybody could make it happen, it's definitely him.

Watching flashbacks of Spider-Man fighting fascists is fantastic, as too is the veteran actor's delivery throughout his time in the movie. Cage not only nails some of the more somber and serious moments, but also comes up trumps when it's time to drop a little humor. This sudden tonal shift is something that he's mastered over a long and successful career and really helps the character to shine.

5 Shameik Moore

Back in late 2018, not many people knew who Miles Morales was. Fast forward a few years, however, and he's starred in his very own video game and is destined to play a leading role in the follow-up to the hugely successful PlayStation exclusive, Marvel's Spider-Man. Before all that though, came Into the Spider-Verse, in which Shameik Moore lent his dulcet tones to the character.

Moore's ability to capture Miles' youthful naivety is somewhat reminiscent of Tom Holland's portrayal of Peter Parker. In fact, it could even be argued that Moore actually does a better job of selling the sense of shock that comes through having developed superhuman powers, although the very nature of a voice-only appearance perhaps makes this a little easier to pull off.

4 Jake Johnson

The idea of an emotionally crippled Peter Parker is certainly an interesting one and is wonderfully executed by Jake Johnson's show-stealing performance in Into the Spider-Verse. A few eyebrows were raised when the former New Girls star was handed the role, but his masterful delivery helped to silence his doubters pretty quickly.

With this in mind, that Johnson's Peter B. Parker character will soon be returning for Across the Spider-Verse should come as great news for those who watched the original flick. For anybody who didn't, Johnson's performance is just one of many compelling reasons to check it out, particularly with the sequel fast approaching.

3 Tom Holland

If Tom Holland continues at the rate he's going, he'll almost certainly end up going down as the best Spider-Man actor of all time. He does an excellent job of capturing some of Peter Parker's comic-book mannerisms and has helped to successfully integrate the wall-crawler into the Marvel Cinematic Universe without any major hicoughs.

There's perhaps an argument to be made that Holland has benefited from the meteoric rise of comic book movies much more than most, with his appearances throughout the MCU helping to reinforce his suitability for the role. He's undoubtedly made the most of those opportunities as and when they've arisen though, putting in stellar performances whenever he's been called upon.

2 Christopher Daniel Barnes

Before superhero movies really took off in the early two-thousands, watching animated shows was the closest that fans ever really got to seeing their favorite comic-book characters in motion. Spider-Man: The Animated Series was one of the better ones and ran for five full seasons before being unceremoniously canceled in 1998.

For those who grew up watching the show during the nineties, Christopher Daniel Barnes was Spider-Man and did a truly fantastic job of bringing the character to life. The show also featured plenty of other talented actors, including Mark Hammill as the Hobgoblin and Simpsons voice actor Hank Azaria as Peter's long-time rival, Eddie Brock.

1 Tobey Maguire

spider-man-actors-ranked-tobey-maguire

There are certain elements of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy that haven't aged all that well, but Tobey Maguire's performances as the titular character definitely aren't among them. At a time when superhero movies were struggling to find their footing, Maguire brought a touch of class to the role that very few others could have managed.

Emo Spider-Man aside, Maguire's portrayal was truly excellent, with the actor managing to nail both Peter Parker and his web-slinging alter ego. It's unfortunate that Raimi's once planned fourth Spider-Man movie never saw the light of day, though, with the imminent introduction of the multiverse, fans will be hoping that they haven't seen the last of Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man just yet.
