Any Disney movie isn’t complete unless there’s a funny sidekick beside the main character’s side. Whether they are inanimate objects coming to life, animals that may or may not talk, or supernatural beings that are magically part of the story, side characters can make or break some movies.
Out of so many side characters that could make it to the list of being great, here is a compiled list of what can be argued as the better out of them all. Not only do they add humor and happiness in every situation, but they help the main character in many ways, whether it be advice or some laughter in dark situations.
8 Beauty And The Beast: Lumiere & Cogsworth
These two, while having some differences, are amazing together. Through their love-and-hate relationship, they bring out the best in each other. Lumiere is more passionate, and Cogsworth is sensible, but they both desire the same goal, creating a great dynamic team.
Both help the Beast and Belle fall in love, only driven by the goodness of their heart and without selfish reasons. The two share opposite personalities, which is also a great message for viewers to see that anyone can truly get along.
7 Frozen: Olaf
Olaf took the internet by storm when Frozen came out, not only for his humor and antics, but for being the cute and lovable creature who wants warm hugs and summer. Even though he can be a little mindless at times, there is never a time when Olaf doesn’t but others before himself.
He is incredibly loyal; loves fiercely and wishes the best on everyone he cares for. Olaf even sacrifices himself to make sure that the ones he cares for are okay, without a second hesitation and a smile on his face. Because of this, Olaf is a definite on the list of best side characters.
6 Aladdin: Genie
Robin Williams is known for his iconic characters, diving headfirst into his act and creating magical moments that will forever live on. And the Genie is no exception. Aladdin’s trusty sidekick is an incredibly helpful tool during Aladdin’s journey, whether he has a choice in the matter or not.
The Genie helps convince everyone that Aladdin is a prince, helps him escape from the Cave of Wonders, helps him meet Jasmine and helps him when he was nearly drowning in the ocean. The Genie is not only a hilarious person to have at Aladdin’s side, but an essential tool for any dangerous journey.
5 Tangled: Maximus
There are two side characters in Tangled that adds a lot of humor into what is truly a dark tale, but Maximus takes the medal over Pascel. Neither animal talk, however, both show a great deal of emotion through facial expressions. Maximus is the trusty steed of the Corona guard who tracks Flynn Rider.
While traveling with Rapunzel and Flynn, Maximus often gets in fights with Flynn, creating a bit of humor relief in situations, and is seen agreeing with Rapunzel often just with the bat of her eyes. Maximus is a strong character, although a little sarcastic, and isn’t afraid of picking up a sword to fight as if he were his rider.
4 The Princess And The Frog: Louis & Ray
Another unlikely duo seeming to team up together to help the main characters achieve what seems like an unreachable goal. This firefly and alligator are an amazing comedic relief to The Princess and the Frog. Raymond talks fondly of his love that turns out to be just a star, which brings humor and sadness to the audience, while Louis dreams of playing his trumpet with the big boys, another impossible that is nothing but humorous.
These two do everything in their power to help the frogs on their journey while bringing their own character development with them, creating an iconic duo in Disney.
3 Mulan: Mushu
This tiny comedic is an amazing sidekick to Mulan. Mushu is a loyal creature with the most notable character transformation. Starting off selfish, Mushu begins to care for those around him and helps Mulan as best as he can.
Even with some of his most iconic lines, such as “Dishonor on you, dishonor on your cow!”, Mushu helps Mulan with her everyday challenges and supports her journey through her training and fighting. What began as Mushu wanting to create a name for himself, turned into one of the most iconic and supportive side character in Disney.
2 Big Hero 6: Baymax
This friendly giant is nothing but a softy yet is surprisingly powerful underneath his passive nature. Created to help and heal people, Baymax is also useful during battles. Not only does he add amazing humor in Big Hero Six, but he is a useful tool during any dilemma.
He can heal any wound, internal or external, while sacrificing himself for those he cares for. Baymax is a vital companion and even makes the movie with his humor.
1 The Lion King: Timon & Pumbaa
This duo not only created one of most iconic songs in Disney history, but stopped at nothing to aid their friend, the future Prince Simba, in The Lion King. Although this group isn’t the strongest or smartest when it comes to facing problems, they risk their lives to distract the hyenas.
Not only do they cause a wonderful distraction, but they help raise Simba when he was a cub and prepare him for going against Scar. Because of Timon and Pumbaa, Simba is never alone and has the courage to face his enemy.
