The first half of 2022 has already seen a plethora of high-profile game releases throughout the year. The long-awaited Elden Ring took the gaming world by storm when it finally released at the end of February with Sony launching Horizon Forbidden West just a week earlier. Nintendo has also released new entries in many of its major series with Pokemon Legends: Arceus in January and Kirby and the Forgotten Land in March. Now, a new report from the NPD Group has revealed 2022's top sellers so far.

The NPD Group has become one of the gaming industry's most trusted sources for sales statistics with the market research company regularly posting monthly statistics. Previous monthly rankings have seen expected games like Pokemon Legends: Arceus and Elden Ring frequently topping the charts with games like LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga also performing well. Now, the newest report from the NPD Group's Mat Piscatella gives a look at the first six months of 2022 with a mix of old and new games dominating the charts.

The report posted Friday by Piscatella shows Elden Ring unsurprisingly taking the title of best-selling game throughout the first half of 2022 after leading several months since its release. Following Elden Ring are LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga and Pokemon Legends: Arceus with the Top 5 rounded out by Horizon Forbidden West and MLB The Show 22. MLB's high finish is particularly impressive due to the ranking not including digital sales of the baseball game on Xbox or Switch.

Best Selling Games of 2022

Past the Top 5, the remainder of the list serves as a mix of both new games released this year and older games that continue to boast impressive sales. Mario Kart 8 and Animal Crossing: New Horizons both sit within the top 20 at 9th and 16th respectively, likely bolstered by their recent DLC releases. Monster Hunter Rise also placed in the Top 20 finishing at 15th with the game both receiving a PC version and its first major expansion in Sunbreak this year. Nintendo led all publishers throughout the first half of 2022 with seven games placing within the ranking.

While 2022's first half has already seen plenty of major releases, the gaming industry still has plenty in store for players throughout the second half. Nintendo will continue to see several major franchises receive new games through the end of 2022 with Splatoon, Xenoblade Chronicles, and Pokemon set to launch new entries. The Saints Row reboot is set to launch next month and Fall promises high-profile releases like God of War: Ragnarok and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The rest of 2022's packed schedule will look to give Elden Ring a run for its money.
