PS4 Is The Best-Selling Console for 8th Straight Month

By | 2 years ago

The PlayStation 4 was the best-selling console in August, marking the console’s 8th straight month of being number one. Sony confirmed the PS4’s continued success in a statement, thereby backing up the NPD reports for the month, which also revealed that Madden NFL 15 on PS4 was the highest selling game.

Meanwhile, the Xbox One doubled its own hardware sales last month when compared to its July performance. Microsoft, in a statement to IGN, cited the popularity of the Madden NFL 15 Xbox One bundle.

According to the NPD Group, total hardware and software sales were up from August 2013, however PS4 and Xbox One console sales accounted for a majority of it; software was much lower this year due to fewer big releases (look at the delays we had). As reported by VentureBeat, hardware sales brought in $196.2 million, up 116% from last year; software accumulated $231.6 million, which was down from August 2013’s $293.4 million. NPD analyst Liam Callahan:

“Overall new physical retail sales increased by 8 percent in August 2014 over August 2013. The month followed a similar pattern of prior months with explosive hardware growth driven by eighth-generation consoles offsetting declines in software.

“Deep declines in seventh generation software (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii) of 57 percent were not offset by growth in eighth generation software, leading to a net decrease of console software sales of $47 million.”

As mentioned before, Madden NFL 15 took the top spot on the retail sales list, followed by Diablo III: Reaper of Souls and Minecraft. The PS4 version of the game not only outperformed the Xbox One version, but the Xbox 360 and PS3 copies as well. Additionally, it seems that the PS4 versions of games outsold their Xbox One competitors, save for Call of Duty: Ghosts. This is also a bit unsurprising, as the Call of Duty series has also done better on Xbox platforms historically and of course, Activision has a deal with Microsoft to bring DLC to Xbox platforms first.

That said, as the NPD only tracks physical sales, these numbers aren’t an accurate representation of overall industry performance.
