The year 2020 has come to a close, and so all the review scores are in for the titles that released during the year. Metacritic has compiled all of the data, revealing the top video games for 2020 for each available platform and listing them off. This includes all the top PlayStation 4 games that released in 2020, with the list proving that Sony's PS4 delivered quite a bit of variety to gamers last year.

The top-rated PS4 game of 2020 on Metacritic was none other than Persona 5 Royal, which had an impressive 95 score. Persona 5 Royal is an enhanced version of the original Persona 5 with some additional content to make it an even more well-rounded experience. A couple of other PS4 games earned a 90 or above in 2020, that those include The Last of Us 2 with a 93 review average score and Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition, which also earned a 93.

Here are the top 10 highest-rated PS4 games of 2020, according to Metacritic:

  • Persona 5 Royal - 95
  • The Last of Us 2 - 93
  • Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition - 93
  • Dreams - 89

The top 10 highest-rated PS4 games includes a couple of virtual reality titles as well, with Dreams supporting PlayStation VR and Pistol Whip built exclusively for VRPistol Whip had an impressive 88 rating, cementing itself as one of the world's most consistently popular VR games currently available.

Compared to the top Switch games of 2020 list that Metacritic put out, the PS4 list has many more bigger budget, triple-A video games. However, there are still some indie titles to take note of, including Kentucky Route Zero: TV Edition and Spelunky 2, which earned 88 and 87 scores, respectively. Spelunky 2 is also notable for having been a timed-PlayStation console exclusive.

There are plenty of big PlayStation games launching in 2021, so it will be interesting to see what this year's lineup looks like when it's all said and done. However, Sony will be slowly focusing more on the PlayStation 5 instead of the PS4, and so it's possible the PS4 will be missing out on some of the year's biggest games. Regardless, it should still have plenty of quality gaming releases, ranging from indies to tentpole PlayStation exclusive releases.
