A horror-themed team can be both scarily successful and seasonal, depending on why you want to choose such a ghostly group.

Whether you're building a team for the Halloween season, or for your own macabre gain, we've collected the best Pokemon nominations for a horribly heroic team. From coffins to enchanted dolls, to demons - Pokemon has it all. Note: there will be no legendary Pokemon on this list, only the creepy creatures attainable from each generations' normal catalog.

10 Cofagrigus

best horror theme pokemon team cofagrigus

Every Pokemon involved with the Cofagrigus line is some level of creepy. Yamask carries around its own mummified face and Runerigus will show horrific visions to anyone who touches it.

But the worst by far is Cofagrigus. Used as a tank in most parties, the sole Ghost-type 'Mon not only eats gold but people, too. If anyone is unfortunate enough to get close, there's a high chance that Cofagrigus will grab them and mummify them. Legends say that it used to be human, once, but has since forgotten, and waits for victims in the ruins.

9 Drifloon

best horror theme pokemon team drifloon

Anyone who is familiar with the Pokemon universe - and its' sometimes very dark origins for the creatures - will have heard of Drifloon. This buoyant balloon-shaped Pokemon was introduced in Generation IV, and quickly gained a reputation for being a little odd.

Drifloon is essentially the Pokemon version of Pennywise: they seek out children to fill its' need for company, and attempt to steal the ones who mistake it for a balloon. Drifloon can grow in size, and if that wasn't enough, they can explode with a gross screeching sound. These dastardly dirigibles are useful in battles with the Aftermath ability, and Ghost/Flying type combination.

8 Beheeyem

No horror-themed anything would be complete with an alien variety. The off-world Pokemon of choice is Beheeyem. Evolving from Elgyem, which originated from a UFO crash site some years ago, Beheeyem is a reference to B.E.M - 'Bug-Eyed Monsters.

A fun quirk of this species is that they seem to make Dubwool mysteriously disappear sometimes. Also, their hands are hypnotic. The lights on their 'fingers' can rewrite people's memories if they stare too long. Beheeyem's strong psychic moves can amp up any team, especially its Analytic ability that adds 30% power. By the way - they evolve at level 42. That's definitely a reference to Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy.

7 Lampent

best horror theme pokemon team lampent

Lampent, the Ghost/Fire middle child of the Litwick line, can be equipped with some feisty moves such as Shadow Ball and Fire Blast. Aside from usually burning those around it, there is more than meets the eye with this tricky torch.

Allegedly, Lampent is a representative of death itself - like a glowing grim reaper. Its Pokédex entry in Pokemon X & Y states that it "hangs around hospitals waiting for people to pass on" so it can absorb their spirits. If this isn't a horrifying addition to a team, what is?

6 Gorebyss

There are more reasons than the daunting task of evolution that makes Gorebyss a frightening foe. Gorebyss' opposite evolution, Huntail, looks scarier than this pink pointy thing, but it doesn't actively kill things.

RELATED: Underrated Pokemon Moves You Should Use

Gorebyss actively hunts other Pokemon, and stabs them with its' protruding mouth, and literally sucks them dry. The remains are left at the bottom of the ocean. This gruesome fact was only announced in the Pokédex in Generation VI - let's not think about what happened before a warning was put in place.

5 Parasect

best horror theme pokemon team parasect

Despite the unfortunate Bug/Grass typing, Parasect can pack a punch on the battlefield. And with such a grim origin, it fits right in with a horror team. Parasect is the unfortunate evolution of mushroom-laden bug Paras, but by the time it evolves, there is no bug left.

The parasitic mushroom on its' back overtakes any and all functions of the Pokemon, rendering it a sentient shell. The Tochukaso controls the bug's remnants, and if removed, the bug will not move. The clouded eyes of Parasect show that there is truly nothing left inside.

4 Gengar

best horror theme pokemon team gengar

Gengar needs no introduction, but here we are: one of the most recognized Pokemon in the world, Gengar is an incredibly strong Ghost/Poison-type that remains a cornerstone in many parties - not just the spooky ones.

RELATED: The Creepiest Pokemon (That Aren't Ghost Types)

Now, why is Gengar a scary Pokemon? It is literally a Shadow Pokemon. Its Pokédex entries since Gen I show its' evil nature: it mimics people's shadows and laughs at their fright, it absorbs heat to cause a chill, curses people, and steals the life force of its prey.

3 Honedge

honedge best horror theme pokemon team

Honedge may or may not be on this list as it is a literal weapon. But that's not all. A very strong Steel/Ghost-type, Honedge is a great choice of attack Pokemon with some really strong moves (and a great evolution).

The Sword Pokemon is creepy, too, as it is inhabited by the spirit of a departed person. It, like many other Pokemon, can drain the life force of people by wrapping its cloth around them. Somewhat grim is the fact that Honedge's shiny form is red in color. Or is it blood?

2 Banette

best horror theme pokemon team banette

The grinning, grey evolution of Shuppet is Banette. The Marionette Pokemon boasts the Insomnia and Cursed Body abilities, and a solid Ghost and Dark moveset able to be learned.

It's not hard to see why Banette made it to this list - it looks terrifying. Once a plush doll, it got left behind, it is now an accursed being. It harbors ill-will against children and aims to find the one who lost it. Banette can generate energy by using itself as a voodoo doll, essentially. It is said that if it is treated with kindness, it can revert back to a stuffed toy.

1 Houndoom

best horror theme pokemon team houndoom

'Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war' is a Shakespeare quote that surely heralded the creation of Houndoom and predecessor Houndour. The horns on its' head, pointed tail and skull-shaped pendant give this Pokemon a terrifying look.

The devilish dog is a dual Dark and Fire-type, with high stats and impressive moves to boot - such as its many flame-related abilities. If touched by this mystical fire, it will hurt forever. It is also said that Houndoom's cries have been mistaken for the grim reaper itself.
