As one of Canada’s greatest talents, Martin Short has built quite the legacy of movies and other forms of entertainment in his long and still thriving career. His latest outing is the Disney Plus series, Only Murders in the Building, which features Short alongside Steve Martin and Selena Gomez.

This comedy-mystery series is filled with laughs and shocks, and Martin Short’s chemistry and joy with other characters are infectious. However, Only Murders in the Building isn’t only the best Martin Short has to offer, and his impressive library boasts of his talent.

9 Mars Attacks!

An army of aliens travels from Mars to visit the United States President, under the pretenses of peace and prosperity. However, it is soon revealed that these sinister-looking aliens are here to conquer and destroy. This campy movie from Danny Elfman features a great cast, one member being Martin Short.

The film itself is a great parody of the early 1950s sci-fi movies, with every member of the cast seemingly in on the big joke of this fun spoof. Martin Short plays the Press Secretary, Jerry Ross. Having an affinity for women, Jerry Ross accidentally causes the White House to fall when he gives a private tour to the Martian Girl, an obvious ruse from alien invaders.

8 Captain Ron

When Martin Short’s character, Martin Harvey, inherits an old yacht, he decides to embark on a Caribbean island with his wife, daughter, and son to hire a mysterious Captain Ron. This character, played wonderfully by Kurt Russell, helps the family set sail, and hilarity ensues.

It’s fun to see Kurt Russell goofing off as his usual stoic self, as he appears to have great fun in the role of Captain Ron. Russell lets loose his comedy chops, whilst Martin Short plays the straight man. It’s a fun story, where his character works like a charm with Russell’s, and thankfully, there's no need for this mysterious character to be a slasher villain.

7 Inherent Vice

Created as an American period neo-noir film, with mystery and crime at the center, Joaquin Phoenix’s character, Doc Sportello, is a private detective, an inept one at that. Doc’s adoration for all things pot makes for an interesting tale when he takes on a strange case from a former flame.

Playing Doctor Rudy Blatnoyd, D.D.S., Martin Short brings casual insanity to his performance. Rudy seems ever high, and ever the womanizer. His oversized purple suit is just as groovy as the film itself is. A standout scene is when the police pull over the characters, and Rudy freaks out in a cussing rampage on the paranoid cocaine-filled journey.

6 Pure Luck

When the daughter of a wealthy businessman winds up missing from a trip to Mexico, it’s up to the veteran investigator, Raymond Campanella to take the challenge. When Raymond turns up unsuccessful, he receives a buddy in accounting, Proctor, as played by Martin Short.

The film itself is an absolute riot, and Martin Short has everything but Pure Luck in this comedy flick from the 90s. Martin Short plays the unluckiest man on Earth, in a role that demands much physicality, and a hilarious charm as always, from Martin Short.

5 Three Fugitives

After 5 years in prison, and a portfolio of over 14 bank robberies, Daniel Lucas goes to the bank to open a new account. It’s a fresh start for his character until Ned Perry runs into the bank with an oversized coat, a gun, and a grenade. Perry takes Lucas hostage, in a complete misadventure of a professional and unwilling bank robber, and an inept and desperate one.

Nick Nolte and Martin Short have great chemistry in this comedy flick, which is filled with hilarious moments and a bundle of heart. The slapstick humor works well, as do the emotional moments involving Perry’s ill daughter.

4 Father Of The Bride

frank eggelhoffer from father of the bride

As a remake of the original 1950 film of the same name, this 1991 romantic comedy finds George Banks struggling to let go of his oldest daughter as her wedding approaches. With Steve Martin at the lead, there are bound to be some great gags. Enter Martin Short, and it’s a comedy riot. Illogical plot twists aren't needed for a good time here.

Martin Short’s character, Franck Eggelhoffer, is eccentric, loud, and fun. The character comes out of the left field and steals every scene he is in. Short is terrific at eating up the scenery, all whilst making the serious played George Banks ever so uncomfortable.

3 Three Amigos

When three film actors find themselves out of work, they venture to a Mexican village with the belief that they will be reprising their famous roles as the Three Amigos. However, the characters Lucky Day, Dusty Bottoms, and Ned Nederlander find themselves in a whirlwind of trouble, as the village is being attacked by bandits.

Three comedy legends, Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, and Martin Short, wonderfully play off each other in this film. Their ineptitude as Hollywood cowboys makes for a hilarious picture as they try to save the village in their ludicrous ways.

2 Innerspace

jack putter from innerspace

With a blend of sci-fi, comedy, and romance, Innerspace provides a great viewing experience and is only bolstered by the performance from Martin Short. When Tuck Pendleton volunteers to be shrunk into the body of a lab rabbit, he is by accident put into the body of a hypochondriac, Jack Putter. All the while, a gang of industrial spies chase after them.

It’s a bizarre comedy and one that works brilliantly thanks to the 80s charm. Martin Short’s character Jack Putter is hilarious, especially at the discovery of a tiny man burrowed inside him. There’s hilarity, action, and friendship in this flick.

1 The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause

jack frost from the santa clause 3

With the beloved Disney Santa Clause franchise set for a comeback in a Disney Plus series, many wonders if there will be room for another wild character in that of Jack Frost. Jack Frost was played by Martin Short in The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause and had become a somewhat iconic character in the bizarre franchise, which had many twists on iconic Holiday characters.

Martin Short is let loose as the eccentric Jack Front, whose agenda is to fulfill Mr. Claus’ wish that he never became Santa, thus leaving the role to Jack. There’s a wild ride to be had, with a lot of laughs thanks to Martin Short and Tim Allen’s chemistry.
