Suffering a ludicrous death and subsequently being reincarnated into another world has become an anime cliche; however, as true Isekai fans know, "if all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail." Not every Isekai tale is a carbon copy of another, as there are numerous subdivisions of this popular genre, each possessing distinctive traits; predictability has become a thing of the past in most cases.
Many of the titles mentioned below fall within several sub-genres and do not exclusively epitomize the selected category but are prime examples of the various forms of Isekai nevertheless.
15 Comedy- KonoSuba
This side-splitting otherworldly adventure overflows with monstrous exploits and plenty of parodies to guarantee uproarious laughter. This show is not for viewers who take their Isekai too seriously, as KonoSuba prioritizes poking fun at stereotypical anime tropes above all else.
Satou Kazuma and his crew are the perfect party on paper; however, during combat, they have more in common with headless chickens. Lacking efficiency in their designated roles, this ill-fated team achieves the bare minimum but still creates a great deal of chaos nonetheless.
14 MMORPG- Sword Art Online

Arguably one of the most popular Iseakai of all time, Sword Art Online delves into the intricacies of assimilating into a video game and how profoundly traumatic the violence and bloodshed are when it's a hands-on experience.
The Black Swordsman quickly becomes the best solo fighter; however, as the difficulty level intensifies the further the "players" ascend Aincrad's tower, Kirito reluctantly partners with the adept Asuna to expose Argus' treachery to the (real) world. Each installment submerges the team into a different game, for that authentic MMORPG experience.
13 Slice Of Life- Isekai Quartet
All dressed up with nowhere to go, these fan-favorite Isekai protagonists are unceremoniously plucked from their epic adventures and transported to an everyday school setting where the grandest quest ahead of them is merely getting along with each other.
Overpowered abilities are of little use in the alternate reality academy but their lackluster social skills are tested as the worlds of Ainz Ooal Gown, Satou Kazuma, Naofumi Iwatani, and the likes abruptly collide, as heroes and Demon Lords find commonality in the most humourous ways possible.
12 Drama- Ascendance Of A Bookworm
Some anime approach the reincarnation experience more earnestly but without traumatizing the viewers with violent content. Five-year-old Myne is in an awful predicament indeed, as the world she now finds herself in does not have adequate access to books!
Desperate for literature, Myne constructs a printmaking process with her "futuristic" wisdom, while her talents allow her to quickly ascend to Noble status. Inflicted with the deadly Devouring disease, the aspiring librarian must navigate through the treacherous political systems to see her dreams to fruition.
11 Unexpected Antagonist - I'm a Villainess So I'm Taming the Final Boss
Aileen Dautriche is quite well acquainted with Otome scenarios and quickly deduces the dating sim setup of her current dilemma; however, there is one glaring issue; she was supposed to be the happy heroine!
After promptly coming to terms with her villainess role, Aileen finds allies in the Demon King's community and worms her way onto a path of success (and away from her pre-scripted death scene.) Becoming a baddie could be the perfect excuse for immoral, selfish behavior, but as the blonde beauty proves, nothing is truly set in stone.
10 Historical Fantasy- Parallel World Pharmacy
A reputable pharmacist is suddenly inserted into a medieval European setting and has inadvertently adopted the powers of Panactheos, the God of Medicine, but in the form of a ten-year-old boy.
Although this magical anime does not directly reflect historical events, Falma de Médiciss gains the upper hand by analyzing the medical milestones of the past (such as the discovery of the Leeuwenhoek microscope) and major factual incidents including The Black Death. The Queen (named Elisabeth) accompanies references towards Greek Mythology and various other titbits to satisfy the history boffs.
9 Reverse- The Devil Is A Part-Timer!
Sometimes, entertainment standards increase significantly when the Isekai trope is inverted, and a fantastical VIP winds up living in a human realm with no idea how to cope with the mundane, monsterless stresses of modern-day survival. Satan once ruled over Ente Isla but now struggles to keep things together as a fast-food joint employee desperately to return home.
Barely able to access his magic, the Demon King gets a crash course in customer service at MgRonald's and befriends an old enemy, much to his Demon General's dismay, who effectively becomes Sadao's nagging housewife.
8 Monstrous-Form - That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime
One sub-genre that certainly contributed to keeping Isekai alive is the non-human reincarnation, which can sometimes get a bit absurd, but is particularly successful in Rimuru Tempest's case. Restarting life as an ambiguous blob is surely a harrowing experience; fortunately, this demonic slimeball "Predator" can consume most matter and subsequently level up his skillset and appearance in the process.
Rimuru's situation improves considerably once he teams up with a Storm Dragon and several others; the overall narrative takes a fairly relaxed approach, prioritizing worldbuilding and eliminating cringeworthy ecchi elements.
7 Otome- Trapped In A Dating Sim
While Leon Bartfort's story doesn't strictly follow the Otome guidelines, viewers will undoubtedly comprehend the intricacies of being Trapped in A Dating Sim, except with the "game" stuck on hard mode. Instead of seamlessly assuming the lead character's role, poor Leon is a lowly generic Mob; however, he is determined to beat the system and find the woman of his dreams.
After painstakingly working his way into the Royal Academy, Leon quickly discovers that, unlike regular Isekai adventures, sociability is more advantageous than combat skills; this near-NEET certainly has his work cut out for him!
6 Adventure- Grimgar, Ashes, and Illusions
Some series take full advantage of the adventure side of Isekai by thoroughly fleshing out the true nature of missioning through a supernatural terrain filled with bizarre beasts and severe hardships.
Haruhiro finds himself among a group of equally confused reincarnates who form a haphazard alliance, but it seems the best fighters have other plans. Scraping the bottom of the talent barrel, Haruhiro's party all sign up as volunteer soldiers and learn survival skills by trial and error, each attempting to sharpen their selected expertise (but struggling profusely.)
5 Harem- Rising of the Shield Hero
While many Isekai narratives include a bevy of babes (or a heap of hunks), Naofumi Iwatani's story revolves around the concept of a Harem and his pursuit of acquiring one.
The young otaku is quite excited to find love in his new life but ends up proving why assumptions are the mother of all (ahem) mistakes. The Shield Hero, oblivious to the whole RPG HUD setup and virtually useless in offensive combat, is forced to rely heavily on his hand-selected harem while protecting them at all costs.
4 Comfy Cooking- Restaurant To Another World
Why shouldn't anime foodies get to enjoy the Isekai experience, too? The Nekoya may look like an average restaurant, and for six days a week, it is. However, on Saturdays, its door becomes a secret portal for guests from a magical medieval world, allowing fantasy creatures to savor the tastes of the iconic Japanese/Western fusion cuisine.
The demon girl Aletta joins the dragon Goddess Kuro in the supernatural service industry (with Tenshu manning the kitchen) as they entertain the colorful patrons fortunate enough to find this little slice of heaven.
3 Parody- Romantic Killer
Not many Isekai can successfully avoid as many tropes as Romantic Killer does! The feisty Anzu as she is suddenly gets bombarded with beautiful boys, which is agonizing for this gamer girl, who is quite content with her fictional hunky heroes.
Not much has changed in Anzu's "alternate dimension" besides the brutal abductions of her favorite vices and the (intentionally) forced plot points. Anzu does everything in her power to bypass the predetermined narratives while unintentionally making some lifelong friends along the way.
2 Psychological Thriller- Darwin's Game
Some Isekai worlds seem quite enjoyable (from the viewers' perspective, at least), but not everyone's otherworldly travels are worth envying. Sudou Kaname and many others trapped within this survival RPG are literally living out a nightmare as they get hunted by unknown assailants, eager to claim the valuable bounty on their heads.
Unfortunately, it seems that for the most part, the only way to survive this death trap is to take part in the bloodshed (which has a permanent, lethal side-effect in reality), it's kill or be killed, and many are bloodthirsty!
1 Summons- Re: Zero
Not all Isekai heroes have to suffer a (corny) death before traveling to another world; however, that doesn't make things any easier for poor Natsuki Subaru, who has no exemplary skills to speak of (and wasn't given much of an Isekai Bonus, either.)
"Barusu's" only advantage? Retaining a respawn point with a seemingly limitless supply of lives, his memories intact, and a determination to protect the darling Emilia. Most summoned heroes to have the chance to meet the instigator behind their reincarnation, but Subaru is kept in the dark about, well, pretty much everything.
